Spying On Icebergs?
Climate Change: We can’t stop terrorists from boarding planes with explosive undies, but the CIA has assets sufficient to monitor Arctic ice and look for signs of global warming? Is al-Qaida recruiting polar bears?
One wouldn’t think that the increasing polar bear population and the increasing rate of recidivism of former Guantanamo detainees released into the wild were related, but they are.
At the urging of Al Gore, the administration is signing on to a plan to task vital intelligence assets to protect not the people of the United States, but the environment.
The program, shot down by President Bush, who thought we had better things to do after 9/11, involves using government intelligence assets, including spy satellites and other classified sources, to monitor such things as clouds, glaciers, deserts and tropical forests.
Climate change alarmist and former Vice President Gore began lobbying for the program’s resumption in 2008 and has received the enthusiastic endorsement of CIA Director Leon Panetta, who met with scientists backing the program in November.
“Director Panetta believes it is crucial to examine the potential national security implications of phenomena such as desertification, rising sea levels and population shifts,” said Paula Weiss, an agency spokeswoman. The only thing we should be scanning the world’s deserts for are terrorist targets for our Predator drones.
Sen. John Barrasso, Republican of Wyoming, is appalled at this misuse of federal surveillance equipment, including the highly classified satellites of the National Reconnaissance Office. He believes the agency should be fighting terrorism, “not spying on sea lions.”
This is especially true considering that our security agencies cannot monitor and keep a terrorist from boarding an aircraft — even a radicalized jihadist who paid for his one-way ticket with cash, checked no luggage and was turned in by his own father at an American embassy. But we’re supposed to track polar bears and ice floes?
As for Al Gore’s pushing of the program, Tom Borelli, director of the National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project, says: “If anything, Al Gore is the real national security threat. Gore’s climate change fear mongering, which lines his own pockets with cash, has stoked a war against the fossil fuels so vital to our nation’s economic prosperity and national security.”
The program resurrects a scientific group that during the Clinton administration advised the government on environmental surveillance. Called Medea, for Measurements of Earth Data for Environmental Analysis, the group evidently feels we’re more endangered by melting polar ice than, say, Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
Back in 2007, Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel and Illinois Democrat Dick Durbin pushed legislation to make the environment a national security priority, even though it was hijacked airliners, not rogue icebergs, that brought down the World Trade Center and attacked the Pentagon.
Using intelligence assets to draw conclusions about whether warming is real, man-made and imminently dangerous is dicey — considering the recent dead-wrong national intelligence estimate that said Iran had stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003.
This nonsense is in keeping with the theme first advanced by Gore in his book “Earth in the Balance”: that the internal combustion engine is the greatest threat to mankind in its history. Gore and Bill Clinton have both said global warming is ultimately a greater threat than terrorism.
The April 21 issue of Time called green “the new red, white and blue” and compared global warming to the fight against Nazism and fascism. The cover took the famous Joe Rosenthal photo of Marines planting our flag on the blood-soaked island of Iwo Jima and replaced our flag with a tree.
We disagree that a purely hypothetical and thoroughly discredited threat to our planet, attributed to our use of carbon-based energy, is as serious as the threat posed by Islamofascism. When the al-Qaida threat recedes, we’ll start worrying about the glaciers.
