MY SAY: THESE ARE THE WORDS OF FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT…SO APROPRIATE FOR 9/11
Dear E-pals: FDR did not mince words; he did not call Nazism an ideology that was hijacked.
Now I ask you simply to substitute the word Jihad wherever the Gestapo, or Hitler, Mein Kampf or the Nazis are named. It fits to a tee, but where is the candidate or legislator or cabinet official who will even utter the name of the existential enemy of our time?Who will denounce the appeasement of aroused Islam which threatens our academies, our financial institutions, our heritage and our homes? Who is discussing homeland security and the need for immigration control and profiling?….rsk
Heralding the Proclamation of a National Emergency on May 27, 1941 Roosevelt warned:
“Some people seem to think that we are not attacked until bombs actually drop in the streets of New York or San Francisco or New Orleans or Chicago. But they are simply shutting their eyes to the lesson that we must learn from the fate of every Nation that the Nazis have conquered.
The attack on Czechoslovakia began with the conquest of Austria. The attack on Norway began with the occupation of Denmark. The attack on Greece began with occupation of Albania and Bulgaria. The attack on the Suez Canal began with the invasion of the Balkans and North Africa, and the attack on the United States can begin with the domination of any base which menaces our security – north or south. But we know enough by now to realize that it would be suicide to wait until they are in our front yard.”
On September 11th, 1941, after the sinking of the American vessel the U.S.S. Greer, the President spoke:
“We cannot bring about the downfall of Nazism by the use of “long-range invective.” But when you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck before you crush him.”
And last and best his response to the sinking of the U.S.S. Kearney on October 17th, on Navy Day October 27th, 1941:
“The forward march of Hitler and of Hitlerism can be stopped – and it will be stopped…… history has recorded who fired the first shot. In the long run, however, all that will matter is who fired the last shot.”
“Hitler’s torpedo was directed at every American, whether he lives on our seacoasts or far from the seas and far from the guns and tanks of the marching hordes of would-be conquerors of the world.”
“Your Government has in its possession another document made in Germany by Hitler’s government. It is a detailed plan, which, for obvious reasons, the Nazis did not wish and do not wish to publicize just yet, but which they are ready to impose a little later on a dominated world – if Hitler wins.”
“The property of all churches will be seized by the Reich and its puppets. The cross and all other symbols of religion are to be forbidden. The clergy are to be forever silenced under penalty of the concentration camps, where even now so many fearless men are being tortured because they have placed God above Hitler.”
“In the place of the churches of our civilization, there is to be set up an international Nazi church – a church which will be served by orators sent out by the Nazi government. In the place of the Bible, the words of Mein Kampf will be imposed and enforced as Holy Writ. And in place of the cross of Christ will be put two symbols – the swastika and the naked sword.”
“These grim truths which I have told you of the present and future plans of Hitlerism will, of course, be hotly denied tonight and tomorrow in the controlled press and radio of the Axis Powers. And some Americans – not many – will continue to insist that Hitler’s plans need not worry us and that we should not concern ourselves with anything that goes on beyond rifle shot of our own shores.”
“It has not been easy for us Americans to adjust ourselves to the shocking realities of a world in which the principles of common humanity and common decency are being mowed down by the firing squads of the Gestapo.”
“Today in the face of this newest and greatest challenge of them all we Americans have cleared our decks and taken our battle stations. We stand ready in the defense of our Nation and the faith of our fathers to do what God has given us the power to see as our full duty.”
