NY Times’ big travel spread on Jerusalem through the eyes of an anti-Zionist atheist

The New York Times devotes three full pages in its weekly travel section to Jerusalem seen through the eyes of a writer soured on Israel and Judaism. Naturally one could expect that. This is after all the secular, liberal Times which still hasn’t reconciled itself to the rebirth of a Jewish state.

Right at the start of his article (“Lost in Jerusalem” Jan.15) Matt Gross spells out his peculiar bona fides to tackle Jerusalem as a travel writer. Among all the countries in the world, he writes, “there was only one that I had absolutely zero interest in ever visiting: Israel.”

Why? Because “to me, a deeply secular Jew, Israel has always felt less like a country than a politically iffy burden.”

As for any religious sensibilities and connections, Gross proudly confesses that “I’d tried to put as much distance between myself and Judaism as possible.”

Yet, despite his atheistic, anti-Zionist armature, Gross finds lots of interesting things in Jerusalem. “The Old City turned out to be, at least in terms of geography and architecture, exactly the kind of place where I feel comfortable,” where he was turned on by trying to master the paths of its dense warren, laid out with sense of order.

His first point of special interest is the “Kebab Shop” and then some cybercafés. Because as readers soon discover, Gross may superficially allude to Jerusalem’s great landmarks – Temple Mount, the Via Dolorosa, the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher — but what really turns him on are the restaurants, cafes and bars. Especially the latter where he spends many hours getting half drunk.

Muslims in Europe are increasingly converting empty Christian churches into mosques.The proliferation of mosques housed in former churches reflects the rise of Islam as the fastest growing religion in post-Christian Europe.

There are now more practicing Muslims than practicing Christians in many parts of Europe, not only in large urban centers, but also in smaller towns and cities across the continent.

As Islam replaces Christianity as the dominant religion in Europe, more and more churches are set to become mosques, which increasingly serve not only as religious institutions but also function as the foundational political building blocks for the establishment of separate, parallel Muslim communities in Europe that are based on Islamic Sharia law.

The latest churches destined to become mosques are located in Germany, where the Roman Catholic Church has announced plans to close up to six churches in Duisburg, an industrial city in northwestern part of the country, due to falling church attendance.

Divide and Rule Israel by Yoel Meltzer

Historically one of the most effective ways for overcoming an opponent is to employ the tactic of “divide and conquer.” Whether on the battlefield or on the playing field, this all-purpose method can be adapted to fit nearly any situation.

Interestingly, the Hebrew translation of this popular phrase is “divide and rule.” In light of recent events in Israel it is clear that the Hebrew translation is far more suitable for this society, as the name of the game in Israel is not to conquer per se but simply to rule.

Seen from this angle, a clear pattern can be discerned from the onslaught of negativity being transmitted to the Israeli public for the last month or so. Although societal problems do exist here and no one is suggesting that they be swept under the carpet, the image being depicted of a country that is dominated by extremist religious elements threatening to turn Israel into the second coming of Iran is a far cry from the reality of life in Israel.

British University Investigates Alleged Assault On Jewish Student During Nazi-themed Game
It seems that rehabilitating the Nazis for fun and frolics is becoming quite the trend in some British quarters, even (it’s alleged) among members of the Athletics Union of that bastion of leftism, the London School of Economics (LSE), during a ski trip to Val d’Isère in December.

The LSE’s student newspaper, The Beaver, reports:

‘LSE students are facing disciplinary action after participating in a Nazi-themed drinking game during the Athletics Union’s ski trip… Later in the night, two students were engaged in an altercation, one of whom sustained a broken nose from the incident.

‘Nazi Ring of Fire’ involved arranging cards on the table in the shape of a Swastika, and required players to “Salute the Fuhrer.” A video featuring students making antisemitic comments was uploaded to Facebook, but has since been removed….

The film of War Horse, adapted from the novel by Michael Morpurgo, has just been released in the UK, [and Australia]but as well as horses being killed on screen there is something else for filmgoers to cry into their popcorn over. Morpurgo is happy to repeat vicious lies about Israel without seeming to bother checking facts.Last February Morpurgo was given the honour of reciting the Richard Dimbleby lecture, which has been delivered by an influential figure every year since 1972, and he chose to speak on the lack of childrens’ rights around the world. He pointed out that 8 million children a year die before the age of 5. As he said, “that’s a holocaust of children every year”. He also mentioned that “69 million children never go to school” and that “3.5 million children in our own country are still mired in poverty”.

Most of those 8 million children die from AIDS, war, malaria, malnutrition and other diseases in Africa. But Morpurgo failed to say anything about that, instead choosing to spend a large portion of this high profile speech on the darlings of the left, the Palestinians, and invoking the modern day version of the anti-Semitic blood libel. He relied on statements of those with an anti-Israel agenda.

The group at the London School of Economics (LSE) played “Nazi Ring of Fire” during a ski trip to Val d’Isère.But if playing the game – which involves having cards arranged in a swastika and participants “saluting the Führer” – was not bad enough they also attacked a Jewish man who complained that it was offensive.

A brawl, which was filmed, left the undergraduate with a broken nose, it was claimed. The incident was condemned by the Students’ Union and the Jewish Society and is being investigated.

A spokesman for the university said: “These are disturbing allegations relating to events which took place on a foreign trip organised by the Students’ Union.

“Both the SU and LSE are investigating these events and are prepared to take disciplinary action if the allegations are shown to be true.”

The incident took place during the skiing trip between Dec 9 and 17 organised by the Athletics Union. A number of students were playing the game – a variation of a game called Ring of Fire – but modified it to include references to Nazis. Tensions escalated when a 20-year-old Jewish student complained that the game was offensive and was allegedly ridiculed for his comments. He was then involved in a brawl with a fellow student which left him with a broken nose.

The British Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg today met the Palestinian Authority ‘President’ Mahmoud Abbas on his visit to London. Cameron said that ‘time was running out’ for the two-state solution which was why the ‘settlement issue’, or ‘facts on the ground’, was so important. Clegg went further and condemned‘continued settlement building in the strongest possible terms’because‘Once you’ve placed physical facts on the ground that make it impossible to deliver something that everyone has for years agreed is the ultimate destination [peace via a two-state solution] … it is an act of deliberate vandalism to the basic premise on which negotiations have taken place for years and years and years. And that is why we have expressed our concerns as a government.’

Rick Santorum is magnificently right about tripling the individual tax credit, and doubly right to warn about demographic winter in America. But he’s wrong to propose a special tax break for manufacturing. As an admirer of Santorum, I offer some friendly criticism.

It’s encouraging that Rick Santorum emerged as the leading conservative alternative to Mitt Romney. Unlike the mercurial Newt Gingrich, a man whose contributions to political life are manifold but who is temperamentally unsuited to the presidency, Santorum is a truly nice guy. And as my one-time mentor Jude Wanniski liked to say, the American people want a nice guy in the world’s most powerful office. As a prominent Orthodox rabbi of my acquaintance put it, it says something about American faith that the frontrunners are, respectively, a devout Mormon and a devout Catholic, and exemplary husbands and fathers.

Full disclosure: I have contributed to both Romney’s and Santorum’s campaigns, to the former because I think Romney is the best man to face Barack Obama in the general election, and to Rick Santorum because I like him.

Two recent news stories about Afghanistan reveal the delusional mentality of those conducting our foreign policy. The first is about some Marines who urinated on the corpses of Taliban fighters. Such behavior, of course, is mild compared to the sort of brutal treatment of both the living and the dead typical of all wars ever fought. Nonetheless, this act is contrary to the rules of war and the professional code of the Corp, and as such should be punished. That’s all our official spokesmen need to say about the matter, for it concerns a violation of our military’s high standards that have helped make it the most professional, lethal, and ethical force in the world.

The foreign policy establishment, however, has fallen all over itself issuing solicitous apologies. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her “total dismay,” a reaction stronger than her comments about the Egyptian military slaughtering Copts. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta phoned the utterly corrupt and duplicitous beneficiary of our power and money, Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai, to assure him that those responsible would be found and punished for such a “deplorable” act. Of course, this is a part of the world where brutal violence against civilians is routinely used as a tool of politics, and where torture and mutilation of the living, let alone the desecration of the dead, are standard operating procedure. Yet we cede the moral high ground to Karzai, who said the soldiers’ behavior was “inhuman and condemnable in the strongest possible terms,” something I don’t recall him ever saying about the terrorists murdering our soldiers. Even more risible was the response of the Taliban, who condemned the “inhuman act of wild American soldiers,” one “in contradiction with all human and ethical norms.” This from a group that when it ruled Afghanistan, used a European-built soccer stadium to bury non-shari’a-compliant women up to their necks and then stone them to death, and to machine-gun and behead other miscreants.
