WASHINGTON – Just hours before a group of U.S. lawmakers were scheduled to hold a press conference to blow the whistle on a secret plan by the radical Council on American-Islamic Relations to infiltrate sensitive committees dealing with homeland security on Capitol Hill, lawyers for CAIR contacted the group’s leader and tried to intimidate her into canceling the news conference.
CAIR’s threatening tactics, which had worked on countless other officials, did not work this time, however.
The leader of the group, Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., co-founder of the bipartisan House Anti-Terrorism/Jihad Caucus and a member of the House Permanent Select Committee On Intelligence, went ahead with the event, showing again an intrepid spirit that has marked the retiring congresswoman’s 18-year career in Washington.
At the 2009 press conference, Myrick revealed an internal CAIR memo written in 2007 that called for infiltrating the “judiciary, intelligence and homeland security committees” by, among other things, “placing Muslim interns” in those offices.
The memo was obtained by the authors of “Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret World That’s Conspiring to Islamize America,” which also uncovered new evidence that CAIR directly funded Hamas and al-Qaida terrorist fronts.
At the time, the Washington-based group was under federal investigation for terrorist activities. In court testimony, the FBI identified CAIR as a front group for Hamas, and the Justice Department named it an unindicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorist finance case in U.S. history.
“Groups like CAIR, ISNA (the Islamic Society of North America) and others have a proven record of senior officials being indicted and either imprisoned or deported from the United States,” Myrick said. “There was a lot of evidence presented at the Holy Land Foundation trial which exposed CAIR, ISNA and others as front groups for the Muslim Brotherhood here in the United States.”
Hamas is the Palestinian branch of the Egyptian-based Muslim Brotherhood.
The revelation was alarming. Myrick exposed that Congress does not have a formal vetting process for screening radical Muslims invited to work or pray or speak at the Capitol. As a result, CAIR was able to not only place a number of employees within the Capitol, but also known terrorists and terrorist suspects.
One of them, al-Qaida terrorist Anwar Awlaki, was invited to speak and pray at the Capitol by CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad, who also helped get Awlaki into the Pentagon – outrageously, within months of Awlaki assisting the 9/11 hijackers in their plot to fly a jumbo jet into the Pentagon, as Catherine Herridge later revealed in her book “The Next Wave.”
“There is not a formal vetting process,” Myrick said. “Back in the 1990s, Siraj Wahhaj became the first Muslim chaplain to give the opening prayer to Congress. Siraj Wahhaj was also an unindicted co-conspirator in the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993.”
Wahhaj also happens to be a CAIR board member and one of its largest fundraisers.
The Washington Post says her stand against CAIR and terrorists jeopardized “her own safety” as she received threats from jihadists and had to tighten her personal security. She also stopped attending 9/11 anniversary events for fear of jeopardizing the safety of others attending.
“She wrote the forward [sic] to ‘Muslim Mafia,’ a book which accused CAIR of helping terrorists infiltrate the American government,”the Washington Post explained in its article.
Besides trying to intimidate the congresswoman, CAIR threatened to have the authors of “Muslim Mafia” – Paul Sperry and P. David Gaubatz – arrested and “locked up” in jail.
Instead, the FBI and federal prosecutors took possession of boxes of evidence generated by the book to aid in their own criminal investigation of CAIR, which was later scuttled by Attorney General Eric Holder. (Representatives of CAIR eventually managed to even work their way back into the White House under President Obama, although the FBI still refuses to meet with them and has banned CAIR from all formal FBI community outreach activities.)
The national press attention helped rocket “Muslim Mafia” to an instant bestseller.
Myrick’s leadership in exposing CAIR did not make her popular with many local Muslims and the liberal press in her home district of Charlotte, N.C.
The Charlotte Observer, owned by the liberal McClatchy Newspapers Co., recently accused her of “fomenting hate against immigrant and Muslim communities.”
“She penned the forward [sic] to a book – “Muslim Mafia” – whose researchers called Islam a disease,” the Observer said. In fact, neither the book nor its chief author, Sperry, describe Islam as “a disease” or anything of the kind. “Muslim Mafia” is based on primary sources, including thousands of pages of internal CAIR documents.
The Democrat-controlled newspaper went on to quote Myrick’s biggest Muslim critic, Jibril Hough, the spokesman for the Islamic Center of Charlotte, which the Observer failed to point out is owned by ISNA, which the U.S. government has blacklisted as an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator.
“She’s [sic] just seems caught up in this phobia about who Muslims are,” Hough said. “I honestly believe that she really thinks there is a conspiracy behind every Muslim in public life. That’s what her legacy will be. Someone who promoted Islamophobia and thinks there is a conspiracy behind every Muslim in public life. That we’re infiltrating.”
In fact, Myrick was right not only about CAIR’s infiltration but also about the threat posed by Charlotte resident Samir Khan, a Muslim who attended Hough’s mosque. In 2007, she was the first in Congress to sound the alarm about the jihadist in Congress. The Observer largely dismissed her concerns.
But Khan later turned up with Awlaki in Yemen, where he edited an online magazine for al-Qaida. Khan proved such a threat to America that President Obama eventually approved his assassination by drone strike along with Awlaki, who helped recruit and train Khan.
As Myrick leaves the House on Thursday, she leaves behind a legacy as a strong patriot and fearless stateswoman in the war on Islamic terror.
“The radical Islamofascists have told us how they intend to infiltrate all areas of our society and to use the freedoms that are guaranteed under our Constitution to eventually Islamize our country, eliminate our Constitution, and enact Shariah law,” Myrick said. “It is amazing that we actually have the enemy’s playbook and can see how they have followed every step of it, yet for some reason we don’t want to seriously confront the threat we are facing.”
Added Myrick: “We need to shed the veil of political correctness which shields our government officials from speaking out against them. Until we do that, we do not have a chance of marginalizing them. As soon as someone broaches the idea that the Quran has violent passages, they get shot down as Islamophobes and racists. How is that freedom of expression? And how is that hate speech? Rather than debate these points, groups like CAIR seek to silence the debate.”
