President Obama is still blathering on about talking Iran out of its nuclear ambitions. Here’s the latest update from the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) answering the question ‘how’s that goin for ya?’ “between January and the beginning of September 2012, Agency and Iranian officials held six rounds of talks in Vienna and Tehran…However, no concrete results were achieved….[B]etween mid-December 2012 and mid-February 2013, Agency and Iranian officials held three further rounds of talks in Tehran…Agency and Iranian officials have held one further round of talks, in Vienna on 15 May 2013, aimed at concluding the structured approach document. No agreement was reached and the Agency has not been able to begin substantive work with Iran on resolving the outstanding issues…” The IAEA also said that it cannot “conduct effective verification.” The IAEA already reported in November 2011 “that Iran has carried out activities that are relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device.” Now the Agency says it “has obtained more information which further corroborates the analysis.” President Obama? Awaiting the tooth fairy.
Syrian Crisis Getting In the Way of UN Israel-Bashing Poor Robert Serry, United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. His usual job is to focus on Israel-bashing and the Syrian crisis is getting in the way. Nevertheless, the UN official did his best to refocus the attention of the Security Council on his blame-Israel priorities. Analogizing mass murder in Syria to the plight of Palestinians, Kerry said: “the coming weeks would be critical on two major diplomatic fronts – negotiations to halt the increasingly bloody crisis in Syria, and ending the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” In his briefing, Kerry started with Israel and spent twice as long speaking about Israel than Syria. As the UN has pitched for decades, giving Arabs what they want immediately is now “critical;” the parties “cannot afford to lose” the moment. He proceeded to praise the Palestinians for having “shown countenance in diplomatic fora” – (how soon unilateral declarations of statehood are forgotten) – and to announce that the only “exception” he could see to the parties exercising laudable “restraint” was Israel’s building of apartments. He referred to the Israeli father of five recently murdered by a Palestinian as a “settler” – a nomenclature specifically designed to downplay the attack – and then he made the de rigeur exculpatory reference to “settler violence.”
UN’s Refugee Agency Complains That International Sanctions Hurt Iranians The UN human rights investigator on Iran has been denied entry into the country for years. But UN “humanitarian” officials have no problem going to Iran, knowing full well their presence will be used by Tehran to undercut criticism of its non-cooperation. The envoy from the UN’s refugee agency even took the opportunity to complain that international sanctions were hurting Iranians – not the Iranian government. The Iranian press enthusiastically broadcast the message sent by the UN’s latest
“Apartheid” Israel Charge Dominates UN Meeting – Again Another Israel-bashing day at the UN as the UN Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People met in New York to hear Palestinian Saeb Erekat talk about Israeli “apartheid” and the “catastrophe” of Israel’s creation. Not a word was said about the million free Arab citizens of Israel, or the reality of Jew-free apartheid-Palestine. But facts didn’t get in Erekat’s way as he had this to say about why the Palestinians are boycotting negotiations: “Mr. Erakat said he had no conditions for re-starting negotiations. A halt to settlement activity was not a condition, but “a must”.” The Cuban Vice-Chair of the Committee was excited by that kind of enlightening dialogue, which also included Indonesia’s suggestion to hold another special meeting of the General Assembly on what’s the matter with Israel. (There have been 10 special sessions of the GA ever – half on Israel – none on Rwanda, Sudan or Syria…) The meeting ended by planning the next shindig at UN expense for Beijing in June. In a nutshell, how the UN spreads Jew hatred around the world.
Only Islam Okay In Public In Saudi Arabia The State Department has released the International Religious Freedom Report 2012. It highlights 8 countries of most concern when it comes to religious freedom: China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Uzbekistan. When words like the Saudi “peace initiative” get bandied about in the Arab-Israeli context, remember these words from the report:: “In Saudi Arabia, the public practice of any religion other than Islam is prohibited.”
Welcome To Bizzaroworld — Iran To Preside Over UN Disarmament Panel In case you didn’t think the UN could get even more bizarre (and dangerous), try this one. Iran will soon become the President of the Conference on Disarmament. The Iranians rotate into the job for four weeks near the end of May. Their qualification for the position? Iran is the member state that comes next in the English alphabet after Indonesia. Iran will have the task of managing the 2013 Conference agenda, which includes “the cessation of the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament.” On the one hand, since the mullahs running the country are engaged in a mad race to acquire nuclear arms, chairing a meeting on disarmament may be a bit of a struggle. On the other hand, the Conference just talks, and talking for its own sake is an Iranian art form. This isn’t the first time that the Conference on Disarmament has faced similar controversy. In July 2011it was North Korea’s turn to take the helm. North Korea took the appointment as a sign of approval. Its representative announced that the country was “very much committed to the Conference” and that “he would do everything in his capacity to move the Conference on Disarmament forward.” So fast forward. We find an ever more aggressive North Korea sharing nuclear know-how with like-minded belligerents, such as Iran and Syria. The saddest part of this charade, therefore, is that these countries and their despotic leaders take sustenance from acquiring such formal trappings and basking in the accompanying diplomatic niceties. Bizarre, but not funny.
UN Syria Chemical Weapons Mission Going Nowhere Remember that UN “fact-finding” mission to Syria to determine if chemical weapons were used? The one President Obama is anxiously waiting for? It hasn’t started. Instead: “There is no prospect for a resolution to the diplomatic wrangling between Syria and the U.N. Secretariat about its scope and purpose. In the meantime, any scientific evidence of a chemical attack in Aleppo on March 19 is quickly disintegrating into the soil.” UN in operation: a finding of fact that chemical weapons were used would be a red line. So let’s not find “facts.”
Al Dura – Poster-Boy For UN Anti-semitism – Exposed The photo of 12-year old Mohammed al Dura cowering behind his father – distributed with the storyline that he was shot dead by Israeli soldiers shortly thereafter – was plastered all over the UN’s racist anti-racism Durban conference in 2001. Al Dura became the poster-boy for Palestinian terrorists. Now, “an official Israeli government report has declared…that Mohammed al-Dura…not only did not die but also may never have been shot.” The report supports the struggle to expose the hoax by French Jew, Philippe Karsenty. Karsenty has long charged that France 2 television journalist Charles Enderlin created a media lie by broadcasting edited footage of al-Dura’s alleged death at the hands of the IDF.
Iran Takes Page From Obama’s Benghazi Playbook Iran has taken a page out of President Obama’s Benghazi playbook. Iranian press has explained the goings-on in Syria this way: “Hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed, when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes.” Fill in the blank: ________ minds think alike.
UN Secretary-General Visits Russia But Mute on Syrian Arms Deal The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was in Russia. The UN press release omits any mention of Russian arm sales to Syria. Instead, the SG was anxious to arrange for more talking – and proceeded to beg the Russians to convene the U.S. – Russia co-sponsored conference on Syria asap. Ban Ki-moon also said “the crisis in Syria is first and foremost on our minds.” Which is patently false, as the Israel-fixated UN Human Rights Council will demonstrate when it starts its next session in a week.
IAEA’s Answer For Another Failed Effort With Iran? Set Another TBD Meeting A nuclear-armed Iran is almost here. And the UN’s top nuclear agency, the IAEA has this to say: “We had intensive discussions today but could not finalize the structured approach document that has been under negotiation for a year and a half now. Our commitment to continue dialogue is unwavering. However, we must recognize that our best efforts have not been successful so far. Therefore, we will continue to try and complete this process. A date for the next meeting has still to be set.” And they won the Nobel Peace Prize for keeping us safe.
Obama and Kerry’s Fingerprints All Over Syria Crisis In Syria, the motto for stopping the bloodshed might be summed up this way: when the going gets tough, the tough hold a conference. That’s the latest word from Secretary John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov who are planning the event for some time in June. Neither Assad, nor the opposition, has committed to attend. Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly President Vuc Jeremić raised the number of dead on May 15 to “at least 80,000 people, most civilians.” Syrian NGOs this week put the figure at more than 94,000. With the Assad regime busy adding to the death toll, and rebels recently releasing a video of one of their own cutting out and then eating the heart of a Syrian soldier, the unfortunate reality is that good guys are few and far between. Cannibalism versus mass murder appears to leave poor President Obama in a quandary not of his own making. But the reality is that it is the President who has repeatedly miscalculated on the Arab “spring” and who early on emboldened President Assad. Americans are genuinely concerned by the horrific human rights violations in Syria but are not interested in installing and promoting one more anti-American and anti-Israel Arab government at their expense. The Obama administration has made a mess of it, in large measure by taking its eye off the Iranian ball. Get serious about Iran and its client states and terror satellites will feel the blow. UN “Action” On Syria: A Non-Binding Resolution In the words of the latest UN press release: the UN General Assembly “took action” on Syria. To be specific, the GA….adopted another resolution. Action, UN-style. And only 107 – of the possible 192 UN member states – even voted in favor of the condemnation.
Turkey Finds Way To Push Int’l Criminal Court Investigation of Israel. What Apology? Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda of the International Criminal Court has opened an examination of the Turkish-backed terror flotilla or the “Mavi Marmara” incident. The examination is in response to a complaint lodged by a Turkish law firm who is acting on behalf of the state of Comoros, where the Mavi Marmara was registered. Israel – acting under direct pressure from President Obama who was with Netanyahu in Israel when the Prime Minister made the call to his Turkish counterpart – apparently was deluded into thinking an apology was the end game. Evidently, the terror-supporting state is just warming up. No word from President Obama on the actions of his Turkish friends.
UN Scurries To Praise Its Forces In Lebanon Despite Allowing Hezbollah’s Rearmament Israeli air strikes on Syrian weapons destined for Hezbollah in Lebanon highlighted the dangerous build-up in weapons in southern Lebanon, as Iran’s proxy Hezbollah rearms and prepares to strike Israel again. The UN response? Send over the head of UN peacekeeping to Lebanon to do a PR tour congratulating UNIFIL forces and the Lebanese Armed Forces for keeping the peace. Said Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous: “I have high admiration for all the military and civilian personnel of UNIFIL.” Buried in the UN press release is UNIFIL’s job description: “Established in 1978, UNIFIL is tasked with ensuring that the area between the so-called Blue Line – separating Israel and Lebanon – and the Litani River is free of unauthorized weapons, personnel and assets” Ladsous somehow neglected to mention the job not done: thousands of Hezbollah rocket and missile sites, and underground bunkers stockpiled with weapons in the midst of civilian areas, created since 2006 courtesy UN “peacekeepers.” This is a cover-up, not neutrality.
UN Secretary-General Refuses To Criticize Iranian Head of Disarmament Conference At a news conference, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon repeatedly dodged questions from reporters on Iran becoming chair of the UN Disarmament Conference. He responded that it’s the fault of Member States. (Translation: I just follow orders even if incompatible with the UN Charter.) He also shrugged it off by claiming it’s simply a matter of rotation. (Translation: We’re all automatons.) Ban’s rep even added that it’s all about “the bigger picture” and “progress.” So the UN’s highest officer doesn’t believe an Iranian chair is an obstacle to progress on disarmament.
United States Not Boycotting UN Disarmament Conference When Iran Takes Chair The Obama administration now says it is upset by Iran’s forthcoming ascension to the Chair of the UN Conference on Disarmament. The U.S. is a member of the Disarmament Conference. It knows that chairmanship rotates alphabetically through the 65 members. Assuming the State Department can spell, therefore, Iran’s chairmanship after Indonesia comes as no surprise. But here’s today’s announcement: “Iran’s upcoming rotation as President of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) is unfortunate and highly inappropriate…As a result, the United States will not be represented at the ambassadorial level during any meeting presided over by Iran.” No departure. No boycott. A blip and the U.S. $$ keep on flowing. |
