JUNE 6, 1944 D-DAY THE NORMANDY INVASION
That day was the beginning of the end for the Nazis. This is what President Roosevelt wrote to the families of those who fell in battle including my husband’s brothers Harold (Heshy) King and George (Gersh) King.
“….He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who died that freedom might live, and grow and increase its blessings. Freedom lives, and through it he lives, in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men.”
Hannah Senesh was a Zionist hero who was captured and tortured in Yugoslavia in 1944 at the age of 23 and died by a Nazi firing squad.
From her poems on heroism:
“There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world even though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind.”
