The call from Washington to pause implementation of new sanctions against Iran is another terrible miscalculation by the most naive and clueless US administration since WWII
Talk about “clueless”. Oh, yes. That’s right, this is the Obama administration and its foreign policy, so we’ve talked about “clueless” before, haven’t we. Here’s the latest. Right on cue, after Iran launched a charm offensive through its new and “moderate” President Hassan Rouhani, the Obama administration has come out with the brilliant idea of easing the sanctions.
America’s lead negotiator, Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman, said in an interview with Voice of America yesterday: “We think that this is a time for a pause, to see if these negotiations can gain traction.” She was referring to discussions in the Senate to move forward with plans to stop Iranian oil exports.
Just imagine what the ayatollahs are thinking in Iran. They must be laughing their socks off. Having just been humiliated over Syria and Bashar al-Assad’s chemical attack, Obama starts to cave in to them the second they make a few superficially conciliatory murmurings. He’s being played like a violin.
Economic sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme are the only kind of serious leverage we have so far tried. It is doubtful they are working in the sense that they are getting Iran to stop the effort to acquire nuclear weapons. Ultimately, we will probably have to accept that either Iran does go nuclear or we use military strikes.
But sanctions are a major problem for the regime, and since regime change is the best long-term hope we have on Iran it is just plain crazy to drop the pressure the moment they start to bite.
Clueless indeed.
