“Religious Zionism” describes the often tense relationship between religious Jews and Zionism. At the start, Orthodox Jews overwhelmingly opposed Zionism, which they viewed as a dangerous secular movement. Today, most hope to guide the State of Israel in a more religious direction.
As Rabbi Yehuda Maimon, Israel’s first minister of religious affairs, said:
“Without the Torah — without the restoration of its principles and its legal code — the State of Israel is like a body without a soul.”
