MICHAEL CUTLER: ASK THE POLITICIANS “HOW AND WHY???”
As Americans, we need to more frequently ask our political leaders “How?” and “Why?”
When politicians say, in unison and virtually by rote, “Comprehensive Immigration Reform would help the U.S. economy,” we need to ask, “How?” Each year, $100 to $200 billion is wired out of the United States to the home countries of both legal and illegal foreign workers in the U.S. Clearly, this has an impact on the economy. Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) would increase these remittances and increase the deficit by more than a half trillion dollars.
When politicians tell us that adding unknown millions of authorized foreign workers to a labor pool of unemployed and unemployed American workers would magically enable those struggling American workers and their families to find work, we need to ask, “How?”
Today, one in five American children lives in poverty and goes to bed hungry at night. Tragically, they may later turn to crime to escape poverty because they have no opportunities. Yet, politicians blithely say that educating foreign students and granting them visas so they can work here would help lift Americans out of poverty. We need to ask them, “How?”
CIR would significantly increase the number of H-1B visas for high-tech workers. Politicians who support the claim that admitting many more high-tech foreign workers would help desperate unemployed and underemployed highly educated American workers need to be asked, “How?”
When politicians tell us that providing illegal aliens with lawful status and official identity documents would enhance national security, we need to ask, “How?” Many of these illegal aliens have no reliable identity documents to begin with, and it’s unlikely that there will be interviews or investigations to verify the information contained in their applications.
When they tell us that just securing the border that is supposed to separate the U.S. from Mexico is all that needs to be done to prevent the entry of additional illegal aliens into the U.S., we need to ask, “How is that enough?” We know that at least 40% of the illegal aliens present in the country did not run our borders – any of our borders – rather, they entered via the inspections process conducted at international airports, seaports and land border entry points at the northern and southern borders.
When mayors and governors declare that it is in the best interests of the residents of their cities and states to be “sanctuaries” for illegal aliens who evaded the inspections process that is supposed to prevent the entry of criminals and terrorists, we need to ask them, “How can that possibly be in the best interests of American citizens?”
When politicians claim that the only way to win the mythical “Latino vote” is to pass CIR to placate voters of Latino ethnicity, we need to ask, “How dare you?” How dare you engage in such blatant bigotry to think that all members of a particular ethnicity will always vote and think the same way and have identical values? This is an example of pernicious profiling and is vile, despicable and wrong-headed.
The final question that needs to be asked is: “Why?”
Why would politicians push for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, a program that would do irreparable harm to America and Americans?
For that answer, we need to follow the money.
This is the lobbying money being spent by the Chamber of Commerce and various corporations that want a virtually limitless source of cheap and compliant workers. There also are special interest groups, including advocacy groups, which want more members or more clients to give them more money and provide them with greater political leverage.
This is how these greedy individuals, corporations and special interest groups plan to amass more wealth and power at the expense of America and Americans.
