“Batzi” is a friend and e-pal thanks to the introduction of the indefatigable Nurit Greenger. rsk
If you consider the above title un-PC then I suggest you stop reading here. You may not like my definition of who I am and what moves me every single day of my life. But that is me.
I am a Jew first, an Israeli Jew. I am also a daughter of two Shoa survivors and I am grateful for both. Both carry a tremendous legacy which I vowed to defend and never to betray.
Neither, however, is easy.
Not easy because in today’s PC controlled world, being both, I am expected to play a role that others have designed and woven for us, Jews.
“You,Jews,” they tell me, ” you, of all people, should know the importance of helping the downtrodden.” We are told to be striving for peace at any cost and care for all who suffer. Noble, very noble causes indeed, ones that require time, energy and other precious, yet limited, resources.
I have, therefore, decided to prioritize my causes. I decided to start with my people because as stated above, I am a Jew first. My Jewish people come first.
“Im ein Ani Li Mi li,” (If I am not for myself, who is for me) said the wise sage Hillel two thousand years ago. How prophetic of him to have uttered such a truism, such a reality about his people already then. Though Israel and the Jewish people still have true, loyal friends, to whom I am grateful and will forever be indebted, many others have continued to try and bring a new Shoa upon us. Some, like the UN, the EU and other entities endeavor to do it in the political arena. Others, like our neighbors and their ilk keep waging wars and terror attacks against us in an effort to erase any trace of us from off the world map. Others yet, engage in ongoing efforts to steal our souls, our spiritual essence by offering us a piece of Heaven and the world to come. Some of those who call themselves “friends” do it in return for their support of the Jewish state and sometimes even for financial rewards. Others even demand it in return for their claimed unending love and support for my people. Our Jewish Homeland is being assaulted ceaselessly, repeatedly teaching us Hillel’s wise lesson of survival.
That is my lesson too.
Despite ongoing verbal attacks and criticism against me for diverting all my efforts towards helping only my Jewish state and my Jewish people, I hereby pledge to continue to do so for as long as needed. I will remain loyal to my promise to G-d, to my dead parents and the millions of Jews who died through history, forced to convert or abandon their Jewish faith.
I will continue to fight only for my people as long as needed. I will continue to do so not because I do not care about the millions of others who are currently suffering. I hurt with their pain, I cry with their souls and I bleed with their hearts just as much. And yes, there are some among my people who do help others. At present, however, I, personally, only have time to deal with those that are part of me; my charity begins at home, with my people.
And to all those millions of suffering others, I hereby promise. Once my nation has freed itself from the shackles of hatred, suffering and pain, healed its wounds and has earned its right to live as a free people in the Land of Zion and Yerushalayim, I will have time to fight for you, if you still need.
Until such time, I will continue to act upon Hillel’s words because my people, my nation come first.
