VERMIN IN THE UNITED KINGDOM- “ARTISTS” FOR PALESTINE
We support the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality. In response to the call from Palestinian artists and cultural workers for a cultural boycott of Israel, we pledge to accept neither professional invitations to Israel, nor funding, from any institutions linked to its government until it complies with international law and universal principles of human rights.

‘As a South African I witnessed the way the cultural boycott of South Africa helped apply pressure on the apartheid government and its supporters. This Artists’ Pledge for Palestine has drawn lessons from that boycott to produce an even more nuanced, non violent way for us to call for change and for justice for all. That is why I support this pledge.’
Gillian Slovo, writer
‘I have worked with artists in Palestine for nearly 20 years and I have seen first hand the hardship, suffering, and injustice that the Palestinian people have had to endure.’
Elyse Dodgson MBE, International Theatre Director

Why Israel?
The Palestinians have suffered systematic and brutal injustices at the hands of Israel, for decades. The world recoils from the repeated murderous attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip. But this is only the most visible expression of the entrenched policies: of ethnic cleansing, illegal colonisation, child imprisonment, torture, denial of statehood.
Palestinian civil society has responded through the non-violent strategy of boycott – a potent weapon of the weak for challenging overwhelming force. Just as the boycott of South Africa was a key contributor to the collapse of apartheid, boycott can help to end Israel’s impunity.
