A Tour D’Horizon of the Transgender Anglosphere While other countries cheer the “transitioning” of minors, Britain stops it. by Bruce Bawer

It’s a cartoon, but it’s not meant as a joke. It depicts a woman in a hospital bed holding her newborn baby. A man, apparently her significant other, is sitting on the bed. At the foot of the bed stands a midwife or nurse, who asks: “Who’s going to be breastfeeding?” Both parents’ hands are raised. Indeed, while the mother is breastfeeding the baby, the man has breasts – a real set of knockers – that are connected to a breast pump.
Again, it’s not supposed to be funny. The accompanying text explains that “induced breastfeeding” means “nursing a child to which you yourself haven’t given birth,” and that “you can choose to nurse, whether you are a cis or trans person, and whether you gave birth to the child or not.”
I ran across the cartoon on Facebook, where it had been posted by somebody who’d glimpsed it on the Instagram page of the rural, remote Swedish county of Värmland. It appears to have originated at the website of the RFSL, a Swedish LGBT+ rights group.
(As an extra PC bonus, incidentally, the midwife in the cartoon is wearing a hijab. But as one Facebook commenter noticed, her arms are uncovered, which means that when she goes home after work, her husband and the other men in her family will beat her to a pulp for being haram.)
Bottom line: the trans insanity is everywhere. In the Western world, anyway.
In the U.S., of course, transgender ideology is already the reigning orthodoxy throughout the health-care system. But trans activists operating within that system aren’t satisfied yet. They’re still on the advance, targeting younger and younger children for so-called “gender-affirming health care.” In August, it emerged that Boston Children’s Hospital had been “promoting ‘gender affirmation’ for kids as young as two.” In September, Christopher F. Rufo reported that Lurie Children’s Hospital, the largest facility of its kind in Chicago, was pushing transgenderism on pupils at Windy City middle schools and high schools.
Earlier this month, the American Medical Association, the Children’s Hospital Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics asked the Department of Justice to prosecute social-media users who criticize children’s hospitals for offering “gender-affirming health care” to minors. And in an interview aired just the other day, Joe Biden told a self-identified man-to-girl TikTok celebrity named Dylan Mulvaney that it’s immoral not to allow children to transition.
It might be surprising to see the President of the United States sitting down for an interview with somebody like Mulvaney, except that he’s already been interviewed by rapper Cardi B. Besides, it’s an open question who’s more of a weird creep where kids are concerned – Dylan Mulvaney or Joe Biden.
A word about Mulvaney (she/they). It turns out he has 8.4 million TikTok followers and is represented by CAA, the Hollywood agency. He refers to himself as a “girl with a bulge,” meaning he hasn’t had “bottom surgery,” to use the current euphemism. He also obviously still needs to shave every morning. Although he’s supposedly a “trans female” who’s big on transitioning minors, he comes off as a gay man who’s parodying girliness and transgenderism.
Is he a troll? Is his whole act a long con? The same question has arisen in connection with the notorious high-school shop teacher in Ontario whose grotesquely large prosthetic breasts are discussed regularly on Greg Gutfeld’s Fox News show – and who has been staunchly defended by the Halton District School Board in the name of protecting “gender rights.”
Welcome to Canada under Justin Trudeau, which has embraced the trans agenda tout court. It was Trudeau’s Bill s C-16 that made Jordan Peterson internationally famous after he opposed it with passionate eloquence, arguing that the bill wasn’t about guaranteeing rights to anybody but about forcing everybody to parrot the reality-defying claims of transgender ideology. Peterson’s assertion was roundly mocked. Now, in the province of British Columbia, it’s mandatory to announce your preferred pronouns when appearing in court – and to use other people’s preferred pronouns when referring to them.
I wrote last year about Rob Hoogland, a Canadian father who was sent to prison for trying to save his daughter, then in her early teens, from quacks who diagnosed her as transgender and were in a rush to put her under the knife. At every turn, Hoogland found that the authorities – educational, medical, judicial, etc. – were lined up against him. Transgender theory had been institutionalized across the board without the electorate ever being invited to vote on the question.
For whatever reason, the Anglosphere has proved to be particularly susceptible to transgender ideology. So it’s predictable enough that Netflix is currently running a half-hour Australian documentary, The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone, about a nationally famous Melbourne boy who at 13 successfully challenged the law that denied him injections of female hormones and at 18 secured a court ruling to get “gender-affirming surgery.” In the show, we see him, at 15, giving a talk and, a year later, accepting a human-rights award.
In a meeting with Georgie, age 16, his female doctor gives him props, saying that he’s obviously “feeling positive” about himself. Really? In other scenes, 16-year-old Georgie is in tears, a total wreck – a kid twisted out of shape emotionally by a bizarre ideology and by a clown car full of idiot adults who’ve enabled his twisted journey every step of the day. Not yet divested of his genitalia, Georgie has a crush on another boy. Hello! He’s gay, period. Is all this really about Georgie not being able to deal with being gay?
As Georgie is being wheeled into surgery to remove his manhood, he’s holding a stuffed animal. Repeat: he’s holding a stuffed animal. This is a child. Multiply this image by – how many? How many patients? How many psychologists, endocrinologists, surgeons? Will there be enough prison cells for all of them, once this madness collapses in on itself and the lawsuits start proliferating?
One observation: these pro-trans TV programs almost never show what’s really done surgically in the wonderful name of “transitioning.” They don’t show it because it’s gruesome. Long patches of skin, for example, are ripped from the arm to help forge a grotesque pseudo-penis. It’s not unlike the abortion debate: advocates cling to the sterile term “pro-choice” and fume when pro-lifers display photos of aborted fetuses.
Also: What cheerleaders these doctors are! In scene after scene of The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone, these ghouls encourage Georgie on his self-destructive path and applaud him for having healthy body parts removed. Nobody seems to urge caution, hesitation, prudence.
Meanwhile, every day, all over the world, countless other young people – suffering from cancer or other deadly illnesses – are wheeled into surgery. Nobody knows about them. Nobody cares about them. And nobody acclaims their courage. But when confused, misled narcissists like Georgie go under the knife, they’re international heroes.
Toward the end of The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone, Georgie, now 19, meets with the producers of Neighbours, which, we’re told, is “Australia’s longest-running TV drama.” We see Georgie filming a scene for the show. Title cards tell us: “Georgie is the first openly trans actor to appear on Neighbours….Her work continues the fight led by generations of trans and gender diverse people.”
Generations? Nonsense. Name them. Do you remember trans people ever advocating for their “rights” before a couple of years ago? The whole thing is a bald-faced fabrication. This shameless historical revisionism – along with the pernicious post hoc hijacking of the gay-rights cause – are part and parcel of the mendacious enterprise that is the transgender project. This isn’t a “rights” movement by any stretch of the imagination; it’s an invidious effort to force humanity to reorient itself around a lie.
Amid all this absurdity, there’s one major piece of good news on the trans front. It comes from Britain. In fact, it comes from the National Health Service (NHS), of all institutions, whose gender-identity clinic, the Tavistock Clinic in London, was closed last summer in the wake of revelations that doctors there had prescribed puberty blockers en masse to purportedly transgender children. Given that national scandal, it’s nothing less than mindblowing to report that new NHS guidelines state explicitly that most children who identify as trans are likely just going through a phase, and will snap out of it if left alone.
Wow.
To any objective observer who’s even superficially familiar with the past and present statistics on gender dysphoria among minors, this goes without saying. But among American “experts” on the subject, it’s heresy. “In most cases,” the NHS writes, “gender incongruence does not persist into adolescence.” Not only should puberty blockers and sex hormones therefore not be administered to minors, even “social transitioning” – a boy, for example, being allowed to dress as a girl and use a girl’s name – should be discouraged because of the psychological damage that it can cause. Henceforth, NHS declares, minors who say they’re transgender will be treated not by therapists – who tend to be drenched in ideology – but by physicians, who will be expected to “consider the impact of other conditions such as autism and mental health issues” on kids’ claims to be trans.
Absolutely remarkable – and totally at odds with the latest recommendations by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, which in June lowered its proposed minimum age for starting kids on hormones from 16 to 14, for breast removal from 17 to 15, and male genital removal from 18 to 17.
So the Brits get it – now. Well, not all of them. At Cambridge, they’re now teaching a “gender- and non-binary-inclusive” version of German, even though linguists have complained that it’s a great way to embarrass yourself when trying to converse with actual Germans. A recent article in the conservative-leaning Daily Mail reported on “a transgender comedian” appearing on Britain’s Channel 4 who “stripped completely naked…before playing a keyboard with her penis.” Yes, her penis. And earlier this month came news that 33 of the U.K.’s 43 med schools have agreed to train doctors to automatically “respect and affirm” patients who identify as transgender, no matter what other medical or psychiatric disorders they may have.
But hey, at least the NHS has awakened from the woke nightmare. But its counterparts in the U.S.? Canada? Australia? Nope. And in hospitals in the remote Swedish county of Värmland, a “trans man” can now ask a midwife in hijab to hook him up to a breast pump. O brave new world, that has such people in it!
