‘The Black Day’: A Decade of Displacement for Iraqi Christians by Raymond Ibrahim

https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/20870/iraqi-christians-displacement-decade

August 6 marked the tenth anniversary of “the Black Day,” a day indelible to Iraqi Christians as the start of the unrelenting atrocities to which they were subjected on August 6, 2014, ten years ago.

On that day, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) unleashed a jihadi massacre of unprecedented terror, brutally attacking ancient Christian communities across northern Iraq. Villages were overrun, homes and churches looted and destroyed, and countless lives shattered. Christians were murdered, raped and sold into slavery.

Even though ISIS has largely been neutralized, the remaining 154,000 Christians [in Iraq] face “very high” levels of persecution.

“We stayed in Mosul for 39 days under ISIS control because they initially offered us safety. But then they declared that as Christians and People of the Book, we were infidels. They demanded we either pay the jizya, convert to Islam or face execution.” — Saadallah, an elderly Iraqi refugee from Mosul, recalling August 6, 2014.

“There are very few NGOs left that focus on our displacement and who continue to provide assistance for Iraqi Refugees; but American FRRME is still on the ground and actively helping.” — Nate Breeding, Executive Director of the American Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, interview with Gatestone, August 5, 2024.

Fern Sidman: Examining the Incessant Flow of Qatari Money into American Academia: Unintended Consequences on Campus

https://tjvnews.com/2024/08/updated-version-examining-the-incessant-flow-of-qatari-money-into-american-academia-unintended-consequences-on-campus/

Until recently, the issue of foreign donations influencing American academia remained unnoticed. However, a study published in 2022 by the National Association of Academics in the United States sheds light on a significant flow of Qatari money to universities in the country, particularly in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. According to an in depth report that appeared on the Calcalistech.com web site in October 2023,the study reveals that between 2001 and 2021, Qatar donated a staggering $4.7 billion to American universities, making it the largest foreign donor during this period. What initially seemed like harmless financial support has sparked a series of events, raising concerns about the influence on academic institutions.

Having said this, it should be noted that prominent American universities, including Cornell, Georgetown, Northwestern, and Carnegie Mellon, received substantial funding from Qatar, leading to the establishment of branches in Doha. As was reported in the Calcalistech.com report, Cornell, a member of the Ivy League, opened a medical school with a staggering $1.8 billion donation from Qatar. Georgetown University was also a recipient of Qatar’s largess as they received $750 million for a school of government. Moreover, Northwestern established a journalism school with a $600 million donation from Qatar in 2007.

The significant share of donations comes from the Qatar Foundation, a non-profit organization established by the government in 1995 with the mission to promote education and science in the country, as was indicated in the Calcalistech.com report. While collaborations between nations and educational institutions are not uncommon in the era of globalization, the source and magnitude of Qatari donations raise unique concerns.

US ELECTIONS= THE VIEW FROM AUSTRALIA

https://quadrant.org.au/

The Democrats have just begun their convention in Chicago, the hope being that anti-Semitic protests don’t become riots, Steven Spielberg’s stage-management goes off without a hitch and — fingers tightly crossed —  Kamala Harris doesn’t get too close to a microphone and go off script.

Just such a moment came to pass in Pennsylvania on Sunday, when the anointed candidate strayed too cvlose to reporters and couldn’t resist delivering one of her trademark word salads.  Her thoughts on democracy, such as they are, are below.

In the background, if body language is anything go by, Veep candidate Tim Walz seems a little uncomfortable.

These are the things we stand for and these therefore are the things we fight for! And that’s what our election is about.

Our election is about understanding the importance of this beautiful country of ours in terms of what we stand for around the globe as a democracy.

As a democracy, we know there’s a duality to the nature of democracy. On the one hand, incredible strength when it is intact. What it does for its people, to protect and defend their rights. Incredibly strong.

And incredibly fragile. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. And that’s what this campaign is about.

This campaign is about a recognition that, frankly, over the last several years there has been this kind of perversion that has taken place, I think. Which is to suggest, that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down, when what we know is the real and true measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you lift up. That’s what we see as strength.

Anybody who is about beating down other people is a coward! This is what strength looks like. So we know what we are about, we know what we stand for. And one of the beautiful things about these next 79 days is what the people in this room already have been doing and know. Let’s build community, let’s reinforce community.

‘Reprehensible’: Columbia Students Who Occupied Campus Building Let Off without Consequences Zach Kessel

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/reprehensible-columbia-students-who-occupied-campus-building-let-off-without-consequences/?

Columbia University has failed to discipline students who broke into and occupied a building on campus, even after pledging to do so, according to a new House Education and Workforce Committee report.

Eighteen of the 22 students arrested inside Hamilton Hall after forcibly occupying the campus building remain in good standing with Columbia, according to the report. While the university had previously stated it would expel those who stormed and occupied the building, three of the 22 are on interim suspensions and one has been placed on probation. Twenty-seven of the students arrested outside Hamilton Hall the day after activists broke into the building have had their disciplinary cases closed despite their arrests.

Committee chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R., N.C.) said in a statement that the university’s decision not to follow its own procedures represents a surrender to the mob.

“The failure of Columbia’s invertebrate administration to hold accountable students who violate university rules and break the law is disgraceful and unacceptable,” she said. “More than three months after the criminal takeover of Hamilton Hall, the vast majority of the student perpetrators remain in good standing. By allowing its own disciplinary process to be thwarted by radical students and faculty, Columbia has waved the white flag in surrender while offering up a get-out-of-jail-free card to those who participated in those unlawful actions. Breaking into campus buildings or creating antisemitic hostile environments like the encampment should never be given a single degree of latitude — the university’s willingness to do just that is reprehensible.”

Students who disobeyed the university’s orders and refused to leave the encampment have apparently faced a similar lack of consequences.

Biden Argues Fate of the World at Stake in Presidential Election in Fiery Convention Speech By Audrey Fahlberg

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/biden-argues-fate-of-the-world-at-stake-in-presidential-election-in-fiery-convention-speech/

Chicago – Up until July 21, President Joe Biden was planning to cap this week’s Democratic convention here in the Windy City with a Thursday evening speech that would quiet his critics and forcefully make the case to the American people that he is fit to take on Donald Trump again in 2024.

Instead, this 81-year-old, post-dropout president walked onstage at around 10:25 p.m. Central Monday evening to concede that his second-in-command is better equipped to do the job. It’s “not true,” he told the crowd, that he’s “angry” with those who asked him to step aside. “I love the job. But I love my country more.”

Biden’s onstage delivery Monday evening was fiery and far more energetic than the president America saw on live television during the June 27 in Atlanta, where he looked pale, confused, and struggled to string sentences together. “Folks, let me ask you — are you ready to vote for freedom?” the president said in a more than 45-minute long post-primetime speech that was apparently delayed by poor logistics. “Are you ready to vote for democracy and for America? Are you read to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?”

In a speech that hearkened back to his democracy-versus chaos reelection pitch at the start of his 2024 reelection bid, he reflected on the gravity of his swearing-in nearly four years ago, two weeks after a mob had stormed the U.S. Capitol. He spoke of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville in 2017 that he claims inspired his 2020 presidential run, making sure to pepper his remarks with characteristic Biden quips about his battle for the “soul” of this nation. Biden cast the Democratic Party’s electoral fight against Trump in existential terms, a turnaround from his plea to the American people after an attempted assassination on Trump’s life last month to “lower the temperature” in our politics.

“We’re facing an inflection point, one of those rare moments in history when the decisions we make now will determine the fate of our nation and the world for decades to come,” Biden told the crowd. “We’re in a battle for the very soul of America.”

“We saved democracy in 2020, and now we must save it again in 2024,” he added.

After he concluded his remarks, Biden was joined onstage by Harris, who held the president’s hand in a passing-of-the-torch moment. While he sprinkled in references to his confidence in Harris, Biden focused his speech mainly on his own record and accomplishments as president.

Ruthie Blum: The art of the ‘no deal’ with Hamas The “window of opportunity” to secure the “last chance” release of the hostages isn’t closing. Yahya Sinwar never opened it.

https://www.jns.org/the-art-of-

Israeli negotiators returned home on Friday night, after two days in Doha with mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States. The one party absent was Hamas.

Nevertheless, President Joe Biden seemed to think that this was a minor detail not worth mentioning. Tardy to arrive at an event at the Oval Office—after signing a proclamation for the establishment of a national monument commemorating the 1908 Springfield Race Riot in Illinois—he told guests and reporters, “One of the reasons I was late for y’all is because I was dealing with the ceasefire effort in the Middle East. And we are closer than we’ve ever been.”

Adding a caveat, he said, “I don’t want to jinx anything. But, as my grandfather said, ‘By the grace of God and with a lot of luck, we might have something.’ But we’re not there yet. We’re much, much closer than we were three days ago.”

This particular trip to fantasy land can’t be chalked up to dementia. Team Biden has been consistent in its push to end “Operation Swords of Iron” since Oct. 7—weeks before any Israeli boots stepped on the ground in Gaza.

Leaving aside his administration’s open hostility toward the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and overt desire to topple the longest-serving leader in Israel’s history, America under this crew has an aversion to asserting its power in the world. This explains its refusal to step up to the plate on Oct. 8 and let Hamas honcho Yahya Sinwar know in no uncertain terms that he’d better cough up the hostages, especially those with U.S. citizenship, or else.

Texas GOP Looking Into Reports That Dems Are Registering Noncitizens to Vote Outside of DMVs By Debra Heine

https://amgreatness.com/2024/08/19/texas-gop-looking-into-reports-that-dems-are-registering-noncitizens-to-vote-outside-of-dmvs/

Republican officials in Texas are looking into reports that Democrats have set up tables outside of several Department of Motor vehicles (DMV) offices and are registering noncitizens to vote.

On Sunday, Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo revealed on X that, according to a friend, Democrats had set up voter registration drives outside of three DMVs in Weatherford and Fort Worth.

“Friend of mine’s wife had to take her 16 yr old son to the DMV this week for a new license,” Bartiromo began.

Couldn’t get an online appointment (all full) so went in person and had to go to 3 DMV’s to get something done. First DMV was in Weatherford. Had a massive line of immigrants getting licenses and had a tent and table outside the front door of the DMV registering them to vote! Second one was in Fort Worth with same lines and same Dems out front. Third one was in North Fort Worth had no lines but had same voter registration drive.

Brady Gray, Chairman of the Parker County Republican Party in Weatherford, reacted to the report on X, saying he would look into it.

“Under Kamala’s watch the border has been overrun, now MY county is being overrun,” Gray wrote. “I’m done listening to those who claim ‘replacement theory’ is racist and conspiratorial. Democrats are intentionally trying to circumvent law to steal elections. That’s not hyperbole, it’s a fact.”

The Republican chairman added that since Bartiromo’s disturbing post went out, he had been inundated with messages from concerned residents asking if the Parker County GOP was aware of the report.

“We are, and I will be fully investigating the claims in our community,” Gray said.

NPR Proves They Despise Trump 162 Times The malicious, hopelessly partisan prestige press. by Tim Graham

https://www.frontpagemag.com/npr-proves-they-despise-trump-162-times/

How do voters know the prestige press is hopelessly partisan? For three weeks, Kamala Harris has been refusing all requests for interviews or press conferences, and that goes unpunished. Donald Trump held a press conference, and he was absolutely punished.

Taxpayer-funded National Public Radio demonstrated their ultraliberal tilt for the millionth time — at least that’s how it feels. NPR political director Domenico Montanaro organized a team to pore over Trump’s Aug. 8 press conference transcript and “found at least 162 misstatements, exaggerations and outright lies in 64 minutes. That’s more than two a minute. It’s a stunning number for anyone — and even more problematic for a person running to lead the free world.”

This scandalous figure had all that Glenn Kessler energy from The Washington Post. Remember when Kessler made a database that identified 30,573 “false or misleading claims” from President Trump? When Joe Biden was elected, he proclaimed the Database Days were over. Kessler proclaimed on MSNBC, “I assume the Biden presidency will be a lot like the Obama presidency, and that they will be responsive, and will be able to quickly back up what they’re saying.”

The crucial word there is “assume.” Democrat journalists assume Democrats tell the truth.

This piece was eagerly shared on X by leftist die-hards, from movie star Mark Hamill to “comedian” Dean Obeidallah to MSNBC host Katie Phang.

China Condemns Killing of Hamas Leader And supports Iran’s position of “self-defense” against Israel. by Christine Williams

https://www.frontpagemag.com/china-condemns-killing-of-hamas-leader/

A report by United Press International recently indicated that China is virtually encouraging Iran to attack Israel. This comes as no surprise, seeing that Beijing not only condemned the recent killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, but also made it clear that it “supports Tehran’s defense of its sovereignty, security and national dignity.”

China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, told his Iranian counterpart, acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri, over the phone:

China firmly opposes and strongly condemns the assassination, viewing it as a severe violation of the basic principles of international relations, a serious infringement on Iran’s sovereignty, security and dignity and a direct disruption of the Gaza cease-fire negotiations, impacting regional peace and stability.

Any attack on Israel by Iran obviously has nothing to do with self-defense. It was Iran-backed Hamas that barbarically attacked Israel in the first place, and it is Israel that is fighting a defensive war for its own survival. Iran and its proxies have been brazen about their goal of annihilating the Jewish State.

Contrary to what Wang Yi told Ali Bagheri, Iran is hardly a representative of “peace” in the region. It can better be characterized as the head of the snake that destabilizes the region. Nor does it operate from a place of “dignity.” Savagery and deceit better characterize it.

Communist China is politically anti-Israel, as it is anti-American and anti-Western, despite its complex economic ties and cooperation with the West. China is loyal only to its self-interests and goal of global dominance.

Pure self-interest characterizes the China-Iran relationship. In 2021, China and Iran signed a $400 billion accord, creating a power shift that Forbes described as threatening Western interests. The deal incorporated China’s ongoing Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), “spending billions in infrastructure investment with an eye on long term influence and economic and security hegemony.”

Christopher F. Rufo Beyond Scandal The 2024 presidential campaign invites a sense of realism.

https://www.city-journal.org/article/beyond-scandal

Every presidential campaign opens with a controversy and closes with a scandal. Faced with this prospect, some observers feel disgust, others stoically accept it as the way of the world, and still others approach it with a Machiavellian delight. They see mudslinging and coarseness as the substance that drives great political drama.

The 2024 presidential election, between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, is no different. Vice President Harris began her political career through a high-profile affair with the powerful San Francisco politico Willie Brown. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, cheated on his first wife with their children’s nanny, whom he subsequently impregnated. Harris’s running mate, Minnesota governor Tim Walz, has embellished his military service to the point that some critics have accused him of “stolen valor.” And since becoming the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Harris has changed her positions on multiple issues. These scandal archetypes were once enough to torpedo, or at least damage, presidential campaigns of men like Gary Hart and John Kerry. No longer.

Former president Trump, too, has survived a protracted sequence of personal scandals. His romantic life has splashed through the tabloids for decades, with multiple marriages, accusations of infidelity and womanizing, and an alleged tryst with a pornographic actress. His political scandals as president included impeachment; after leaving the White House, they have included indictment, arrest, and conviction—incidents with no historical precedent.

And yet, Trump endures. He has refashioned his criminal conviction, even his scowling mugshot, as the inciting incident for a comeback narrative. Likewise, Harris has trampled the negative stories beneath her feet and presented herself as a defender of democracy. Trump surpassed his scandals through strength of personality; Harris, through the power of the national media.

What is the significance of this shift in political life? A moralist might argue that we have entered a period of ethical collapse. The old Christian standard no longer holds, it would seem. There is another possibility, however: maybe we have abandoned moralistic pretense and entered a period of greater realism.
