Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Sunday that he would “certainly consider” running for president in 2028, despite his disastrous White House bid alongside failed presidential nominee Kamala Harris, last November.
“If I think I could offer something … I would certainly consider that,” he told the New Yorker Radio Hour during its March 2 broadcast.
One of the reasons Kamala Harris reportedly chose Walz to be her running mate in 2024 was because he had indicated that he had no presidential ambitions.
“Look, I never had an ambition to be president or vice president. I was honored to be asked,” Walz insisted.
His addition to the 2024 Democrat ticket was meant to syphon off voters from the white male vote but failed in its mission due to multiple controversies and missteps, including the governor’s mischaracterization of his military record, his ties to Communist China, and his support for tampons in boys’ restrooms.
The Democrat has faced ridicule online since his interview with the New Yorker went public.
Walz seemed to acknowledge that the party might not be willing to give him a second chance.
“If I feel I can serve, I will. And if nationally, people are like, ‘Dude we tried you, and look how that worked out,’ I’m good with that,” he said.
“I’m also, though, not arrogant enough to believe there’s a lot of people that can do this,” he continued.
But Walz added that “if the circumstances are right” and he has the right “skill set” for the moment, “I’ll do it.”
Pressed for a yes or no answer, he responded: “I’ll do whatever it takes. I certainly wouldn’t be arrogant enough to think that it needs to be me.”
The Minnesota governor told the New Yorker that the biggest emotion he was experiencing since the election of President Trump was guilt because of the new administration’s spending cuts and alleged demonization of “LGBTQ folks.”
“The thing for me that gives me the most ‘angst’, to be candid, was letting people down,” he said. “An old white guy who ran for Vice President – you’ll land on your feet pretty well. I still struggle with that it was my job to get this won, and now when I see [possible cuts to] Medicaid happening, when I see you know, LGBTQ folks being demonized – when I see some of this happening, that’s what weighs on me.”
He added: “A large number of people did not believe we were fighting for them in the last election – and that’s the big disconnect,” he said earlier on in the episode.
Walz continued: “I’ve always said this: I didn’t prepare my life to be in these jobs, but my life prepared me well. And, if this experience I’ve had and what we’re going through right now prepares me for that, then I would.
“But I worry about people who have ambition for elected office. I don’t think you should have ambition. I think you should have a desire to do it if you’re asked to serve. And that’s kind of where I’m at.”
