WHAT HILLARY CLINTON PROMISED THE US-ISLAM FORUM….SEE NOTE
Addressing the US-Islam Forum in Washington late Tuesday, Clnton said for the first time in decades, people of the region had a real chance of ushering in lasting change.
“Today the long era of winter has begun to thaw. For the first time in decades there is a real opportunity for lasting change,” she said.
The chief US diplomat said the political uprising that swept the region earlier this year, blew the myth that democracy and universal rights were not compatible with the Arab world and dictatorial regimes could stay on in power indefinitely.
She added that America supports the political transition which occurred in Tunisia and Egypt where mass protests resulted in ouster of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali Ali and President Hosni Mubarak respectively. Ben Ali had been in power for 23 years while Mubarak reigned over the ancient North African nation for 30 years.
Clinton urged the interim governments in these countries to take steps for protecting civil rights including those of women and minorities and to ensure growth of democracy. She also flayed the violent clampdown on protesters in Libya, Syria, Yemen and Bahrian.
Since its inception some eight years ago, the annual US-Islam Forum meeting has been jointly hosted by the Qatari government and Brookings Institution’s Saban Centre for Middle East Policy in Doha. It is aimed at improving quality of life and civic participation in the region.
