There is a growing concern that our elected officials at local school boards, school district administrators and our Florida legislators are enabling the teachings of Islam to dominate our middle and high school text books.

Considering the United States of America was founded on Judeo-Christian values and beliefs this bias is troubling at best and dangerous at worse. Read my recent column on Islam.

I did an interview with one of a number of Sarasota County parents, grandparents and concerned citizens who are outraged after it was revealed that textbooks on the Florida Department of Education approved list are heavily biased toward Islam and portray that religion as benevolent and tolerant of other religions.

One of the high school textbooks in question is produced by McDougal Littell titled, “World History: Patterns of Interaction“. On page 263 begins an extensive chapter titled “The Rise of Islam”. In this chapter students are given assignments to make a chart explaining the meaning of Muslim prayer rituals and writing a letter to Mohamed describing his legacy.

I did an interview with Aya whose family background demands that she speak out against this outrage. Her family on one side dates back to Captain John Dillard, who fought in the American Revolution. The other side of her family dates back to Jews living in Baghdad, some of whom were killed in the 1940s. They immigrated to Israel when it became a state.
