IN THE DIVISIVE, decade-old War on Terror, one certitude unites the warriors and the conscientious objectors. It is that Islamism is not to be confused with Islam. “Whatever it’s called,” George W. Bush said, “this ideology is very different from the religion of Islam.” Attorney General Eric Holder described the Islamism of the late Anwar al-Awlaki as “a version of Islam that is not consistent with the teachings of it.” Zeyno Baran has come reluctantly to the conclusion that the Bush/Holder view is false. Her new book describes how Islamists have captured many Islamic religious and social institutions, including most of the Western ones. Islamism has supplanted more traditional tendencies and has become what most people, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, understand as mainstream Islam. Gullible American and European policymakers have partnered with the wrong Muslims, freezing out their friends and empowering those who wish them ill.

America is an island of free speech in an ocean of political correctness. American columnists have to worry about deadlines and the future of print media, not about being hauled into court over the sensibilities of some protected group. But conservative columnists in Canada, Europe, Israel and Australia have to write with one eye on the keyboard and the other on the door.The strangest case of free speech suppressed by political correctness may have come out of Australia where Herald Sun columnist Andrew Bolt was dragged into court under the Racial Discrimination Act by a group of white aborigines who complained that he had questioned their authenticity.

The first rule of White Aborigine Club is that no one talks about it. Australia has a surplus of white aborigines who hold down university positions teaching aboriginal culture, pick up aboriginal scholarships and receive all sorts of preferential treatment. These white aborigines are not albinos, they are “Ward Churchills” — white men and women who claim to be aborigines because of some ancestor. And to question their authenticity all you need is a pair of working eyes.

DEMONIZATION INSTEAD OF EVIDENCE…

In responding to the article Robert Spencer and I wrote about the Center American Progress report smearing critics of Islamo-fascism in the United States and abroad as an “Islamophobic” bigots who needed to be stigmatized and read out of polite society, Matthew Duss merely repeats the slander comparing us to nutcases like Robert Welch, who believed in wild conspiracy theories and thought Dwight Eisenhower was a Communist.

In a glaring example of bad judgment, the State Department has chosen former Olympian and convicted perjurer, Marion Jones to represent the United States as a diplomat to Serbia and Croatia in an effort to encourage those countries devastated by war and natural disasters.
A spokesman for the U. S. Embassy in Belgrade said Jones was chosen as an example that; “you can have things go wrong and you can move beyond them.”
In light of the spokesman’s reasoning, Marion Jones simply doesn’t fit the profile of someone who has overcome something that “went wrong.” Marion Jones didn’t have something “go wrong” in her life; Marion Jones deliberately and purposefully took illegal performance enhancing drugs in an effort to cheat as an Olympian on the world stage and then proceeded to lie to federal Investigators about her drug use, resulting in her being stripped of her Olympic medals and being sentenced to prison.
