We gather this morning to recall the horror of a crime, expressing the grief of those who lived through the tragedy, evoking the dark hours of collaboration, our history, and therefore the responsibility of France.
We are here also to transmit the memory of the Shoah, which the raids were the first step, to lead the fight against oblivion, to testify to the new generations of barbarism that is capable of doing and what humanity may itself contain resources to defeat it.
70 years ago, July 16, 1942, at dawn, 13,152 men, women and children were arrested at their homes. Childless couples and singles were interned in Drancy, where the fall will amount to the museum created by the Shoah Memorial.
Others were taken to the Velodrome d’Hiver. Crammed for five days in inhumane conditions, they were transferred from there to the camps of Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande.
Clear direction was given by the Vichy administration: “Children should not be dispatched in the same convoy as the parents.” So, after agonizing separations that parents on one side, the other children, went to Auschwitz-Birkenau where deported from Drancy had preceded them a few days.
They were murdered. Simply because they were Jews.
This crime took place here in our city, our streets, in our current building, in our stairwells, in our school yards.

What’s next for former New York congressman Anthony Weiner? Baby’s first steps, of course.
“I’m very happy in my present life,” Weiner, 47, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview. “The only next dramatic steps I’m planning on are Jordan’s first,” he says, referring to his 6-month-old son and remaining noncommital on whether he will run for office again.
In his first joint interview with wife Huma Abedin, who is deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the couple address how they survived Weiner’s lewd text and photo scandal that led to his resignation, as well as who has diaper duty.
“It took a lot of work to get to where are are today, but I want people to know we’re a normal family,” says Abedin, 37.
“Anthony has spent every day since [the scandal] trying to be the best dad and husband he can be,” she says of her husband, who does all the laundry. “I’m proud to be married to him.”

Egyptian sheikh gets jail after fondling report
Former lawmaker gets year in prison after found touching, caressing fully-veiled woman on his lap in parked car
An Egyptian court sentenced an ultraconservative former lawmaker and cleric to a year in prison for public indecency on Saturday, after police said they found him fondling a woman on his lap in a parked car at night.
Police have said in a report that the man was touching and caressing the fully-veiled woman when they approached him while parked alongside an agricultural road outside Cairo last month.
Ali Wanees has denied the charges. He claimed that he pulled the car over to assist his ill niece, but police say he is not her uncle.
The court also sentenced him to six months prison for contempt of police. The police report claims Wanees called the officers “sons of dogs” when they knocked on his window asking to see his license and registration.
The ultraconservative cleric’s whereabouts are unknown. He was tried in absentia and is allowed a retrial. The court sentenced the woman he was with – who has been in custody for about a month – to six months in jail. She also has the right to appeal.
Known as a sheikh for his role as a religious scholar, Wanees once sat in parliament as part of a Salafi-led coalition headed by the Nour Party, which won 25 percent of seats in the lower house before it was dissolved late last month.
The case against him is especially embarrassing for Salafis, who advocate the segregation of unrelated men and women. Salafis are known for a no-compromise, literal interpretation of the faith and typically grow long, moustache-less beards.
Earlier in the year, the Nour Party was forced to issue an embarrassing and apologetic statement after one of their lawmakers was reported to have lied to cover up a nose job, claiming that he sustained injuries to his heavily bandaged face from a carjacking and beating. He was kicked out of the party and resigned from parliament.
