Spinning is a deceiver’s art, the craft of persuading suckers they didn’t really hear what they just heard. It’s what modern politics is all about.
President Obama has put his best spinners to work to “clarify” what he meant with his remarks in confidence to the Russians that once past November he’ll have the “flexibility” to alter the American missile-defense system in a way that will please Moscow.
This was no gaffe by a dispensable aide, but a straightforward assurance straight from the horse’s mouth, given when Mr. Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev were caught unaware by an open microphone at the end of a 90-minute conversation at the terrorism summit in Seoul. This exchange was reported by ABC News:

AN Islamic marriage guide that advises Muslim men on how to beat and control their wives has sparked outrage.
The 160-page A Gift For Muslim Couple tells husbands they may beat wives “by hand or stick” or “pull her by the ears”.
Women are told they must not leave the house without permission.
A wife should “beautify herself” for her man and “fulfil his desires”.
And if she disobeys, a husband may “restrain her with strength or threaten her”.
The book, based on the writings of an Islamic scholar, is on sale at online Islamic bookstores and eBay.
It is billed as “the perfect wedding gift”.
But moderate Muslim academic Tarek Fatah said that anyone selling it should be prosecuted.
He warned: “It is inciting men to hit women.”

An Israeli diplomat had to be evacuated from the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Sunday after tens of thousands of locals demonstrated in “support of Jerusalem” and burned Israeli flags in front of the parliament building where the diplomat was attending a conference.
Israeli delegate to the European Parliament in Brussels, David Saranga, was attending the annual EUROMED conference, a joint forum of European and Mediterranean countries, on Sunday when protesters marched toward the Moroccan parliament building, waving Palestinians flags in the air and even burning Israeli ones on the ground.
Days before the start of the conference, Morocco’s Islamist ruling Justice and Development Party (PJD) declared a boycott on the conference to protest the Israeli diplomat’s participation. Aziz Ammari, PJD’s parliament head, told Al Arabiya that his party has a long-held position of boycotting “all forms of activities with Israel.” Ammari was quoted by Al Arabiya as telling Morocco’s Hespress website that his party “will not participate in any parliament activity attended by the Zionist entity.”

Roughly 20 years ago Israel made a decision to bring back from exile in faraway Tunisia its most bitter enemy, Yasser Arafat, and deposit him together with his close associates on our own doorstep. Still further, not content with the shock […]
http://www.nysun.com/national/the-crisis-of-peter-beinart/87757/ On March 19, the New York Times published an excerpt — covering almost half the op-ed page — from Peter Beinart’s new book, “The Crisis of Zionism,” in which Mr. Beinart proposed boycotting Jewish communities in the disputed territories of the West Bank. By day’s end, an extraordinary array of more than 20 prominent […]

“The futility of the way we have fought this war must be felt by everyone fighting it. As I’ve written here often,if you don’t fight a war in a manner calculated to win it decisively, you will lose it inevitably. The corollary to that is that you will also weaken the spirit and readiness of your forces to fight again. Not permanently. Americans are resilient, and our armed forces are still the best in the world. But it may be a long time before we can unbreak our promises to them and restore their readiness to fight again.”
Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales stands accused of murdering 17 Afghani civilians in two different villages on the night of 11 March. From the charges themselves (which include six counts of assault, bringing the total number of civilians believed hurt to 23) we know the army believes it has sufficient evidence to support the charges of premeditated murder which, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, can carry the death penalty.
And there is much we do not know. Bales’ civilian lawyer has said several times that his client has no memory of the events of that night, obviously thinking of an insanity plea. Under the UCMJ, that requires the defense to prove the insanity by “clear and convincing” evidence, a much lower standard than the “beyond reasonable doubt” standard by which Bales would or would not be found guilty.

Expensive overreach could prove fatal if not struck down
On Monday, the Supreme Court will consider the legality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also referred to as Obamacare. The high court will pore over Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution to determine the true meaning behind the words, “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common Defense and general welfare of the United States; To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations and among the several states, and with the Indian Tribes.” The 2012 Supreme Court must determine whether the Founders had any intention of mandating the behavior of private enterprises and individuals.
To me, the answer is obvious: absolutely not.
Our nation was founded on the Declaration of Independence. Freedom of choice and a free market are at the core of our nation’s soul. A governmental mandate for the behavior of individuals and private enterprises is anathema to what our founders intended. The prospect of having an unelected panel of bureaucrats determining fundamental decisions about our individual health care is perhaps the most personal and intimate intrusion into our lives. The concept of this absurd and dangerous law surely ranks with the grievances laid down 236 years ago.
