Mukasey: Obama ‘unlawfully’ sacked IG

In his speech to the conservative Federalist Society today, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey was expected to blast the Obama administration today over its decision to prosecute Sept. 11 plotters in federal court.

Indeed, Mukasey wasted no time taking on President Barack Obama for his illegal conduct, but the first punch thrown was on an unexpected subject–his firing of Americorps Inspector General Gerald Walpin.

In a somewhat jarring conflation of two disparate storylines, the legal group chose Walpin to introduce Mukasey. After taking the lectern, the former attorney general and federal judge lauded Walpin and declared that Obama violated the law when he removed Walpin from his post in June.

“Gerry served as an inspector general until he was not only unceremoniously, but in any reasonable view of the law, unlawfully removed from that position, something he has chosen not to suffer but to fight, as he usually does against injustice,” Mukasey declared.

Mukasey praised Walpin for his lawsuit challenging his firing and noted that the former IG is pursuing the case “at considerable expense to himself but, I would add, with the support of his friends.”

A federal investigation into one of the claims against Walpin, namely that he acted improperly in connection with an investigation into misuse of Americorps funds, was resolved in his favor last month. However, White House officials stressed that Obama had a series of reasons for ousting Walpin, whose removal was sought by the bipartisan board of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

“We have previously provided Congress with a detailed explanation of the multiple bases for this removal and we continue to believe that it was fully merited,” a White House official said earlier this week.
