When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin breathed new life into Sen. John McCain’s stagnant presidential campaign during the 2008 election, millions of voters were immediately drawn to the spirited, down-to-earth Palin. With a genuine beauty that comes not from on-staff make up artists, Palin, along with her husband, Todd, and their children began their journey into the fast-paced, often cruel, world that comes with the new-found notoriety. Entire families were drawn to her closely held conservative values and saw a family that mirrored their own, not created by photo ops and scriptwriters. She, like so many busy moms, unapologetically bought diapers for her son, Trig, at Walmart. Although holding the job of governor of Alaska, she cooked, was wife to Todd, mother to Bristol, Willow, Piper, Trig and Track. We travel with Chuck and Sally Heath as they move from Idaho to Alaska when Sarah was but a toddler. Not a family of great means and connections, the Heath family worked, the children washed dishes and played sports in school. They hunted, fished and relished in the exciting life that the new state offered.
By the time she entered the race as Sen. McCain’s running mate, Palin was no stranger to controversy and adversity. During her rise to the governorship, she remained steadfast in her pro-life, conservative beliefs. Having given birth to a son with Down’s syndrome while in office, she proved her critics wrong by showing that she could run a state with such special considerations with the oil industry and rabid environmentalists that Alaska faces, be a devoted wife and mother. She attended the State Fair every year, making a special effort to visit the Pro-Life booth and other conservative causes without second thought to political fallout. If she proved nothing else, Gov. Palin showed Alaska and the nation that real American voters were hungry for traditional family and capitalist values and were tired of the “good ol’ boy,†corrupt machine filled with politicians for sale. The prime example of a woman who could do it all – have a successful career while being a conservative, a wife and mother active in her family’s lives, Palin won no fans among liberal feministas who cringed at very mention of her name.
Palin openly shares the pain she and Todd felt when oldest daughter, Bristol, broke the news that she was unmarried and pregnant during the presidential campaign. The media immediately leapt into the sewer pit of so-called journalism, attacking not only Sarah and Todd Palin, but young Bristol herself, who was now engaged to the father, Levi Johnston. In Going Rogue, Sarah Palin lays it out for the reader with an openness not allowed by her vice-presidential campaign handlers. We delve into the pain, the acceptance and the support of a family pulling together in time of crisis.
