Exclusive: Napolitano Admits Fort Hood Killings an Act of ‘Terrorism’

Will wonders never cease? This week, Homeland Secretary Janet Napolitano actually used the words “violent,†“Islamic†and “terrorism†in the same sentence. Most notably, she said them in reference to the attack on soldiers last year at Fort Hood by Maj. Nidal Hasan:
“Violent Islamic terrorism … was part and parcel of the Ft. Hood killings,” Napolitano told the Senate Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday morning. “There is violent Islamic terrorism, be it Al Qaeda in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen or anywhere else, [and] that is indeed a major focus of this department and its efforts.”
We thought the word “terrorism†was verboten, and had been replaced with “man-caused disasters.†Perhaps the pain from a broken ankle made Napolitano’s usually “nuanced†thinking a wee bit fuzzy.
FrontPage Magazine’s Jamie Glazov wonders what Napolitano’s next step will be:
Hmmm, I wonder if Napolitano will now confirm that thirteen American heroes lost their lives at Fort Hood precisely because of people like her, who have created a culture in which naming Islamic extremism and crystallizing its roots is disallowed? Major Nidal Malik Hasan would have been thrown out of the army a long time before his shooting spree if members of the army were not afraid to get in trouble for violating “diversity†and felt safe to point a finger at a Muslim who was preaching hate and violence against non-Muslims.
Up until now, administration and Pentagon officials have been reluctant to pair Islam with the attack by Hasan, preferring to say just “terrorism†or simply avoiding the question.
And just a month ago, both Napolitano and Deputy National Security Advisor John Brennan expressed surprise that al Qaeda “had actually reached the point of launching individuals here†when discussing the unclassified review summary of the administration’s failures surrounding the Christmas Day underwear bomber.
Whatever the reason, we applaud this step in the right direction. In fact, we’re looking forward to the day when our government isn’t afraid to go one step further and use the word “jihad†when describing events such as the Fort Hood killings.
Still, when you consider that the administration recently hosted extremist Muslim groups and briefed them on American anti-terrorism tactics, it’s obvious that we have a long way to go with regard to our stance on jihad.
Now is not the time for “baby steps.â€
