Rep. Schakowsky and “The Hezbollah View”
Helen Thomas is a veteran journalist–yet also an anti-Israel firebrand. For decades, she has used questions at White House press conferences to air radical criticisms of Israel. She has defended Saddam Hussein’s launch of Scud missiles against Israel in the Gulf War; indicated that Palestinians have a “right to resist” Israel through force; and charged that Israel’s security barrier against suicide bombings was an “illegal land grab.”
She has continued her extreme anti-Israel line of questioning toward the Obama White House, as toward its predecessors. Last March, she asked press secretary Robert Gibbs why the U.S. gives “iron-clad commitments to Israel.” In 2006, she accused Israel of “collective punishment against all of Lebanon and Palestine,” prompting then-press secretary Tony Snow to describe her perspective as “the Hezbollah view.”
That is a view that Rep. Jan Schakowsky has associated herself with by honoring Helen Thomas at a special luncheon tomorrow in Chicago to celebrate Thomas’s career. She has not criticized Thomas’s anti-Israel views, which have increasingly come to dominate her White House reporting. If Rep. Schakowsky does not share “the Hezbollah view” echoed by Helen Thomas, let her say so. If not, we will know where she stands.
