“Former President Bill Clinton Is Scheduled To Campaign For U.S. Senate Candidate Joe Sestak In Pennsylvania, Months After Trying In Vain To Persuade The Congressman Not To Run.” (“Clinton To Campaign For Sestak In Pa. Senate Race,” The Associated Press, 8/5/10)

WHITE HOUSE USED THE FORMER PRESIDENT TO OFFER SESTAK A JOB TO DROP SENATE BID

Bill Clinton Was Enlisted To Suggest To Joe Sestak That He Take An Administration Job And Drop Out Of Senate Race. “In classic Washington fashion last summer, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel dispatched former president Bill Clinton to put the arm on an old friend, Rep. Joe Sestak of Pennsylvania. Sestak was planning to challenge Sen. Arlen Specter in the Democratic primary; Emanuel wanted him out of the way.” (Michael D. Shear, “Sestak: Bill Clinton Offered Him Job To Quit Race,” The Washington Post, 5/28/10)

“The White House Chief of Staff enlisted the support of former President Clinton who agreed to raise with Congressman Sestak options of service on a Presidential or other Senior Executive Branch Advisory Board. Congressman Sestak declined the suggested alternatives, remaining committed to his Senate candidacy.” (Robert F. Bauer, Memorandum from White House Counsel Regarding the Review of Discussions Relating to Congressman Sestak, The White House, 5/28/10)

White House Chief Of Staff Rahm Emanuel “Dispatched” Former President Clinton “In Classic Washington Fashion” To Strong-Arm Sestak “In classic Washington fashion last summer, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel dispatched former president Bill Clinton to put the arm on an old friend, Rep. Joe Sestak of Pennsylvania. Sestak was planning to challenge Sen. Arlen Specter in the Democratic primary; Emanuel wanted him out of the way… in a phone call, Clinton told Sestak that he had doubts about Sestak’s chances of beating Specter. Then he dangled an offer: Would Sestak be willing to drop out of the race if Obama offered him an unpaid spot on a prestigious presidential advisory board? Sestak flatly turned him down.” (Michael D. Shear, “Sestak: Bill Clinton Offered Him Job To Quit Race,” The Washington Post’s Post Politics, 5/28/10)

BREAKING OBAMA PROMISE OF TRANSPARENCY AND “UNPRECEDENTED OPENNESS”

Obama “Promised Not To Perpetuate Business As Usual” Yet Still Used The Same Shady Tools Of Politics. “‘I don’t see the scandal,’ Steve Elmendorf, who was chief of staff to former Representative Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri when he was the House Democratic leader, said in an e-mail message. ‘Sestak is totally qualified for the job, and Dem and Rep presidents routinely offer members of Congress jobs for all sorts of reasons.’ Indeed, Douglas B. Sosnik, the White House political director under President Bill Clinton, said using jobs to reward political friends was simply ‘business as usual.’ But, he added, that was the problem: Mr. Obama promised not to perpetuate business as usual. ‘It cuts against the Obama brand,’ he said. ‘The public tolerance for these deals is less than in the past.'” (Peter Baker, “For Sestak Matter, a ‘Trust Us’ Response From White House,” The New York Times, 5/24/10)

Despite Obama Pledging: “My Administration Is Committed To Creating An Unprecedented Level Of Openness…” “My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration.” (Barack H. Obama, “Transparency and Open Government,” White House Memorandum, Accessed 5/25/10)

MARKING JUST ONE IN A STRING OF SHADY WHITE HOUSE JOB DISCUSSIONS

In Statement, Colorado Senate Candidate Andrew Romanoff Said White House Deputy Chief Of Staff Jim Messina Contacted Him And Specifically Mentioned Three Positions. Romanoff: “In September 2009, shortly after the news media first reported my plans to run for the Senate, I received a call from Jim Messina, the President’s deputy chief of staff. Mr. Messina informed me that the White House would support Sen. Bennet. I informed Mr. Messina that I had made my decision to run… Mr. Messina also suggested three positions that might be available to me were I not pursuing the Senate race.” (“Romanoff Details Job Discussions With White House,” Coloradoan, 6/2/10)

White House Quickly Shifted Story And Claimed Messina Only Called To Follow Up On Romanoff’s Job Applications “To Determine If It Was Possible To Avoid A Costly Battle.” “Andrew Romanoff applied for a position at USAID during the Presidential transition. He filed this application through the Transition on-line process… Jim Messina called and emailed Romanoff last September to see if he was still interested in a position at USAID, or if, as had been reported, he was running for the US Senate. Months earlier, the President had endorsed Senator Michael Bennet for the Colorado seat, and Messina wanted to determine if it was possible to avoid a costly battle between two supporters.” (“Statement From The Press Secretary On Colorado Senate Race,” The White House, 6/3/10)

And Outgoing Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter Recently Told White House “He Would Like To Consider Remaining In Public Service After His Senate Term Ends.” “Sources tell ABC News that Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pennsylvania, has informed the White House that he would like to consider remaining in public service after his Senate term ends at the end of this session, and White House officials are keeping an open mind about possible job openings for him. Specter, who was defeated in his March primary by Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pennsylvania, is a close friend of Vice President Joe Biden and someone praised for his leadership in pushing for greater funding for the National Institutes of Health.” (Jake Tapper, “An Obama Administration Job for Sen. Specter?” ABC News, 7/15/10)

“Some Who Know Specter Say He’s Eager To Go Out With A Bang — To Have A More Majestic Career-Ender…” (Jake Tapper, “An Obama Administration Job for Sen. Specter?” ABC News, 7/15/10)
