Yesterday, while researching my post about Johnny Carson’s posthumous support of Planned Parenthood, The Hollywood Reporter helpfully called to my attention a new story about another Carson.
Rachel Carson, that is:
Peter Bratt has signed on to direct “Silent Spring of Rachel Carson,†a biopic about the crusading environmentalist, for producers Robert Chartoff and Lynn Hendee of Chartoff Prods.
The movie will focus on the five years that Carson struggled to report and write her seminal 1962 book “Silent Spring,†which argued that pesticides were harming the environment by killing animals and birds and affecting humans.
Carson, who died of breast cancer in 1964, was attacked by the chemical industry even as her book became a best-seller and she appeared at congressional hearings that paved the way for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In 1980, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Isn’t that special? What the gushing press release, and the film’s official website, fail to tell you about Rachel Carson can be countered with this excerpt from a 2009 address by David Horowitz:
Rachel Carson published a book that is regarded as a founding document of the environmental crusade. Her tract warned that the continued use of DDT pesticides would kill the world’s bird population and create a “silent spring.†A little over a decade later, because of the influence of her book, DDT pesticides were globally banned.
As it happens, at the time Carson wrote, the world had been recently freed from the scourge of malaria, which had previously accounted for three million deaths a year. This was thanks to the Rockefeller Foundation and its funding of a malaria eradication program, which relied on the pesticide DDT. Soon after the pesticide was banned malaria reappeared. The resulting epidemics have produced a toll of preventable deaths that already exceeds any other in the grim annals of man-made mortalities.
Since the progressive doctrine of The Silent Spring was implemented, three million people have died of malaria every year for more than thirty years, adding up to a total now of nearly 100 million. Ninety-five percent of the victims have been black African children under the age of five.
As a footnote to this tragedy, Carson’s claim that DDT was harmful to birds has since been discredited.
Read more about the junk science Carson and her (white) followers employed to “save the earth†— and force millions of poor (black) Africans to suffer for generations.
Note, for example, that the filmmakers highlight Carson’s finding that DDT spraying was causing the symbol of America itself, the bald eagle, to go extinct.
The fact is:
After 15 years of heavy and widespread usage of DDT, Audubon Society ornithologists counted 25 percent more eagles per observer in 1960 than during the pre-DDT 1941 bird census.
The left takes sick pleasure in misusing the word “genocide;†would they concede that the needless deaths of millions of Africans at the hands of their fellow do-gooders might just this once merit the use of that term?
We conservatives are all too familiar with the Law of Unintended Consequences, which progressive do-gooders refuse to acknowledge, over and over again. The most memorable description of the Law was coined by Catholic blogger and columnist Mark Shea, who has repeatedly observed that all “great†movements to “fix†society begin with the words, “What harm could it do?â€
And always end, tragically and much too late, with the phrase, “How were we to know…?â€
