Ohio Treasurer-elect Josh Mandel of Lyndhurst will be sworn in today in a ceremony on the floor of the House of Representatives, with John Ratzenberger (Yes, Cliff from Cheers … What’s up with that?”) serving as the emcee. Also grabbing the microphone will be Mandel’s Marine Corps drill instructor, retired Gunnery Sgt. Benjamin Akins.
Courtesy Josh MandelJosh Mandel, seen here on foot patrol in Haditha during his second tour of duty in Iraq in 2007, will make his military service a part of his swearing-in as Ohio treasurer. He’s invited his Marine Corps drill instructor to speak.
Mandel, 33, hasn’t seen Akins in more than a decade since his Parris Island training days. He said he’s not sure what to expect. We’d say be ready to drop and give him 20.
Mandel also reports that although his race was one of the nastiest this election season, he and his opponent, current Treasurer Kevin Boyce, now get along well. They got together at Bob Evans to mend fences and laughed about how ugly their campaigns got.
“We really hit it off,” Mandel said, noting that they text and talk on the phone often, smoothing the transition.
