The Muslimist Brotherhood? Updated

Fjordman writes in today with a story from Spiegel Online that notes the concerted efforts of the Muslim Brotherhood, jihad men of the hour, to look normal and non-threatening for benefit of the swooning world media. Spiegel begins by describing the MB crest, which, mirabile dictu, is suddenly nowhere to be seen in the MB’s world headquarters!

A Koran, two crossed swords and a message: “Prepare yourselves.” The crest of the Islamist Egyptian group Muslim Brotherhood is nothing if not martial. Perhaps even a bit too martial for the international press On the first floor of a shabby apartment building on El-Malek El-Saleh street in downtown Cairo, the group — which for years has been Egypt’s largest opposition movement — is receiving a gaggle of scribes from abroad. And the official symbol is nowhere to be seen. Even verses from the Koran or photographs of the holy Kaaba in Mecca, of the kind that hang in living rooms across Egypt, are absent. Instead, visitors are confronted with desks piled high with fliers, packed bookcases and cabinets full of file folders. The message is clear: The Muslim Brotherhood is but a normal political party, right down to the business cards, water fountain and chalk board.

A couple of points: Until we’re able to call the MB an ISLAMIC group, to see through the props — or, in this case, the absence of props — to the jihad behind the flim flam, we’re doomed to mumble, fumble and miss every opportunity to fend off the tentacles of the nascent caliphate. Frankly, if this padded little suffix — ist —  had any validity, we would be talking about “the Islamist group, the Muslimist Brotherhood.” As I have long wondered in a variety of contexts, what is “Islamist” about the Brothers that is not also Muslim?

UPDATE: Andrew Bostom checks in to point out something about the picture (above) that Spiegel chose to illustrate today’s story. Notice the foreheads of at least two of the men, center and right. They are both marked with the “zebibah,” the bruise that the most devout Muslims get from the trauma of head-ground contact in  prayer. Bottom line? You can take away the crest. You can take away the Koran. You can take away the Kaaba. But you can’t take away the … “ist”?
