My two cents
We always hold our breath in anticipation when we see the potential or hear the murmurings of reform from the Islamic world. Islam has failed to reform itself in any way, dating way back to 623 when Mohammed ordered raids to be carried out on Meccan caravans. While the rest of the world has moved forward through the period of enlightenment, abandoned slavery and other such barbarisms, Islam remains firmly entrenched in the 7th Century.
This is prevalent in the lack of achievements from the Islamic world and equally telling is the absence of ANY Islamic nation in the top 30 of the 169 nations listed in either the 2009 or the 2010 Human Development Index.
In June 2009, Asia Bibi, a Christian farm hand from Pakistan was asked to fetch some water for some of her Muslims fellow workers. Upon her return, they accused her of being unclean and they refused to drink the water. Later that day a mob came to her house and beat her and her family, one of her co workers had complained that she had made a derogatory comment about Mohammed.
In November 2010 Judge Muhammed Naveed Iqbal of Punjab, sentenced her under Section 295 C of the Pakistani Penal Code, to death by hanging. This section of the Penal Code is described as, “Use of derogatory remarks regarding the Holy Prophet of Islam”
Salman Taseer, a senior member of the Pakistan People’s Party, and the Governor of Punjab Province was a vocal opponent of both the Blasphemy Laws and the treatment of Asia Bibi. In January this year Taseer was shot when getting into his car at a market by one of his bodyguards. The guard had told police that he killed Taseer because of the governor’s opposition to Pakistan’s blasphemy law.
Many were angered by his defense of a Christian woman sentenced to death. Taseers assassin has become a national celebrity, with fervent supporters throwing rose petals upon his arrival to Court to answer the charge
This week the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousaf Raza Gillani, finally put to rest both Asia’s hopes and the worlds hopes, that the Pakistani blasphemy Laws might be changed. In a statement Gillani said “No un-Islamic law will be enacted in the country and all laws will gradually be reformed according to the spirit of Islam, and no law will be enacted to replace the blasphemy law.”
In January, Pakistani Minorities Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, the only Christian Minister of the Cabinet and The Minister for Religious Minorities, was interviewed by Surrey radio hotliner Gurpreet Singh and predicted his own death. Bhatti’s premonition became a reality Wednesday when he was gunned down by Islamic extremists in front of his mother’s home in an Islamabad suburb. A Taliban spokesman said Bhatti’s killing was “a message” to those who oppose Pakistan’s blasphemy laws
Prime Minster Gillani stated recently that he has vowed to stamp out what he terms Islam extremism from his country. The archaic and unjust blasphemy laws and Sharia law inspired by the Koran and Hadith don’t qualify as extreme in his eyes.
