Stand with Jeff Wiesenfeld and Israel!
Our good friend, Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, is a trustee of the City University of New York. He is under attack by the New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/06/nyregion/opponent-of-honor-for-tony-kushner-criticizes-palestinians.html
and others for speaking out at a CUNY board meeting against the university bestowing an Honorary Degree on viciously anti-Israel playwright Tony Kushner.
The entire board must approve any Honorary Degree granted, and thus Kushner will not be receiving the degree. But there is now an all-out attack on Jeff Wiesenfeld, who has shown enormous courage in standing up for Israel.
Please note the following:
- Wiesenfeld has never opposed the granting of an honorary degree to any of the myriad critics of Israel who have received them from CUNY institutions;
- Qualitative difference between Tony Kushner and all others who criticized Israel:
o Kushner states that Israel should never have been created;
o Kushner claims that Israel engages in ‘ethnic cleansing,’ which goes far beyond ordinary criticism, and is nothing short of a blood libel, akin to so many blood libels of which Jews have been accused throughout history.
Jeff Wiesenfeld is only one of the trustees who voted to refuse the honor to Tony Kushner. Why single out Wiesenfeld? Because he is outspokenly pro-Israel, and a symbol to the Israel haters and their fellow travelers. He is a red flag to them, and they are determined to bring him down.
Among those who have come out against Jeff’s bold stand against a virulent anti-Israel extremist are Rabbi Arthur Waskow and, unfortunately, Ed Koch.
