IRS IGNORES MOSQUES PREACHING JIHAD: MICHAEL CARL

American mosques are preaching jihad in the U.S. in possible violation of their tax-exempt status and the IRS is letting it happen, according to experts on the issue.

“Muslim Mafia” co-author and terrorism analyst David Gaubatz says American mosques simply use foreign money to promote jihad, and there’s no comment or question from the IRS.

“They do indeed preach jihad and more importantly they consider Islam to be a government first and a religion second. This means we are allowing governments of other countries to operate as a non-profit. I have numerous documents showing this,” Gaubatz said.

Atlas Shrugs publisher and Islam analyst Pamela Geller believes IRS inaction is because the agency isn’t equipped to deal with the issue.

“The IRS seems to have no procedures in place for examining the teaching or activities of mosques to determine whether or not they’re abiding by 501(c)3 guidelines,” Geller said.

“The reason why not is because if they did have such procedures or mounted such investigations, they’d be accused of ‘Islamophobia,’” Geller said.

Islam researcher, intelligence analyst, and “Muslim Mafia” co-author Paul Sperry agrees with Geller. Sperry says an IRS audit of any U. S. mosque would be a political hot potato.

“The IRS cracking down on [the] nonprofit status of mosques would be far too politically radioactive for any administration to undertake in our PC world,” Sperry said.

“Imagine the hue and cry from the IRS announcing they’re revoking nonprofit status of mosques, thereby drying up their donations?” Sperry said.

Sperry says he believes the IRS is looking the other way from the jihad-preaching mosques.

“I do know that the IRS is NOT auditing mosques to see if they violate political endorsements restrictions, etc. That’s something I called for in my first book ‘Infiltration’,” Sperry said.

Sperry says that even though the IRS is ignoring the political activities at American mosques, more attention is appropriate.

“It’s absolutely true; more scrutiny is warranted and must be brought to bear,” Sperry said.

Two recent studies suggest that about 80 percent of the mosques in the U.S. are hotbeds of jihad advocacy.

One study done by Mordechai Kedar and David Yerushalmi for the “Middle East Quarterly” says that one explanation for the radicalization is how some imams and their followers read the Quran.

“Jihadist uses the principles advanced by both classical and modern Islamic scholars and ideologues and adapts them to modern situations in a way that provides a broader sanction for the permissible use of violence,” the study said.

The second study done by the New York City Police Department and reported by Andrew Bostom says another explanation is the literature being distributed in the mosques.

“The study’s results provide clear – and ominous – affirmative answers to a prior questions posed. Shariah-adherence was strongly associated with the presence of jihad-violence sanctioning materials, and the presence of jihad-violence sanctioning materials was in turn robustly associated with advocacy of jihadism by mosque imams – religious leaders,” Bostom wrote.

Those two surveys agree with a report in WND last year, which reported cultural analyst Bryan Fischer gave an equally high figure for the percentage of mosques preaching jihad. He says the radicalism has Saudi origins.

“We know that 80 percent of the mosques in America are built with Saudi money. The Saudi Arabian government is sending education materials to these mosques that teach them to spill the blood of infidel Christians and Jews,” Fischer said.

“That means that 80 percent of the mosques in America are inculcating and disseminating this totalitarian anti-Semitic ideology. I’ve seen estimates that there may be as many as 3,000 mosques in the United States. That means that perhaps 2,400 of them are preaching this kind of ideology,” Fischer added.

A sampling of the jihad-related activities in American mosques reveals that the incidents are happening across the country.

In Portland, Ore., the Masjid al-Saber, the Islamic Center of Portland, preached the “Salafi message,” a factor the New York City Police Department study on radicalization says contributed to Mike Hawash’s radicalization. In 2003, Hawash received seven years in prison, along with six others, for conspiring to commit an act of terrorism.

The Dar al-Arqam mosque in Falls Church, Va., was another jihad training ground. The Investigative Project on Terrorism reports that Imam Ali al-Timimi indoctrinated mosque members in jihad.

A federal court in Virginia convicted gave Al-Timimi a life sentence in 2005 for inciting terrorism, inciting support for the Taliban and on explosives and firearms charges.

Paul Sperry reports that the Dar Al-Arqam Center in Falls Church is located in the same building as the, “Saudi-based Muslim World League and its spin-off the International Islamic Relief Organization, two suspected al-Qaida fronts.”

WND reported last year that Imam Abdullah Faaruuq preached jihad at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center Mosque, a 501(c)3 mosque.

Faaruuq was captured in a video on You Tube using words urging Muslims to take up arms.

Analyzing the speech, Islam analyst Robert Spencer said the imam was using classical themes to eloquently advocate for jihad.

“What he’s doing is using Quranic concepts that deal with jihad without explaining to you that that’s what he’s talking about,” Spencer explained.

Like other religious and charitable organizations, most mosques and Islamic organizations in the United States hold IRS 501(c)3 charitable and tax exempt organization status.

The IRS website lists more than 1,000 registered non-profit Islamic organizations holding non-profit status in the United States.

Geller says it’s true that most mosques have been given IRS tax exempt status.

“As far as I know most, if not all, mosques get 501(c)3 status, like churches and synagogues,” Geller said.

Sperry says that many of the mosques are operated under the umbrella group, the North American Islamic Trust based in Oak Brook, Ill. That group is tax exempt.

“Most mosques are owned by NAIT which is a 501(c)3 and an unindicted terror co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation Terrorism Funding Trial,” Sperry said.

The Muslim Students Association, the forerunner of the Islamic Society of North America, established the North American Islamic Trust in 1973, operating with IRS status as a 501(c)3 organization.

The IRS did not reply to a WND request for comment.
