RYAN MAURO: MISSOURI RIGHT TO LIFE STANDS BY ENDORSEMENT OF ISLAMIST 9/11 TRUTHER

On Monday, July 9, I broke the story that the Missouri Right to Life Political Action Committee had endorsed a candidate for Secretary of State named MD Rabbi Alam with close ties to Islamist groups, specifically Viva Palestina, who is also a 9/11 conspiracy theorist who wrote that no Jews were killed in the terrorist attacks.
Those who have contacted Missouri Right to Life have informed us that they are standing by the endorsement. Our requests via email for an official statement about whether the endorsement will be rescinded have been ignored.
The story quickly spread across the Internet after the Washington Free Beacon published their own piece, reporting that Alam was a “satellite campaign manager” for then-presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008 and that he was part of a group that visited the White House in December 2009 (Politicker reports that it was part of a group tour that included nearly 270 other people).
Alam stood by his statement that no Jews were killed on 9/11 in an interview with the Washington Free Beacon and took 20 minutes to explain to the reporter why, in his opinion, it is impossible that the World Trade Center was destroyed by airliners.
Alam was later confronted by a Jewish newspaper armed with the facts, forcing him to apologize for falsely saying that no Jews were killed on 9/11. The apology does not change the fact that he long accepted an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory and there’s no evidence to suggest that he has abandoned his overall belief in a 9/11 conspiracy theory. Nor does it change the fact that he is closely tied to Viva Palestina, a group supportive of Hamas that was founded by anti-American British parliamentarian George Galloway.
Janet Levy, a writer on Islam and national security, told me that she left a message with Missouri Right to Life on July 9 after she read my story and received a voicemail from its Executive Director, Patricia Skain, the next day. She quoted the voicemail as follows:
“We have spent the day researching this whole situation with the candidate Rabbi Alam. We have looked at numerous videos, tried to check into everything we can and honestly we don’t see a reason, a pro-life reason or really any reason to withdraw our endorsement at this time. If you have more information that you can send me that would be fine. We would be glad to look at it. But, we don’t see anything that indicates that he has violent beliefs or tendencies. I understand that a lot of people believe that is part of Islam and honestly I don’t even know. At this time we haven’t any reason to withdraw his endorsement.”
Other individuals who contacted Missouri Right to Life told us they received a similar response.
Since the controversy was picked up by several other outlets, the Politicker reported that ” sources with the DNC say claims of his involvement with the party were greatly exaggerated.” Alam is the State Chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party Asian American Caucus (MPAAC). He also says he leads the National Democratic Party Asian American Caucus, but the Politicker reports that the Democratic Party website listing the entity “includes user generated content made by people who want to form their own groups.”
Meanwhile, a video about Alam and MPAAC’s officials’ ties to Islamist groups has been posted to the Internet. It includes a picture purportedly of Alam sitting in the front row of a Viva Palestina event listening to George Galloway.
The story is bigger than Alam, as explained in my original story and in the new YouTube video. It is about MDPAAC, led by Alam, which appears to be doing damage control since the story broke. It has removed its list of Executive and General Members from the website. Only the list of the Executive Committee State Board of Director remains. MDPAAC’s Campaign Director, Fadi Banyalmarjeh, is involved with Viva Palestina and quotes the Muslim Brotherhood’s founder. Mohamed El-Housiny, who was listed as MDPAAC’s Youth Coordinator until the story was published, is a Viva Palestina operative. El-Housiny’s name has since been replaced.
Adnan Bayazid was listed as the Director of Fundraising. His name is gone, too. On March 14, he filed as a candidate for State Representative of District 27. In testimony to Congress in September 2006, terrorism expert Steve Emerson said that Bayazid was the imam of the Islamic Center of Greater Kansas City and spouted anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about 9/11 just like Alam did.
He spoke for a class at the Kansas City Art Institute where, according to the professor, he spoke for 20 minutes about how the hijackers were not Muslim radicals, but rather “they had all been framed by the U.S. and Israel.” He emphasized that the attacks were a Jewish conspiracy and Jews were told not to show up at the World Trade Center that day. According to court records, his nephew worked for Osama Bin Laden, especially his effort to acquire nuclear materials.
Missouri Right to Life’s Mission Statement states it is “a non-partisan, multi-denominational, state-wide organization which upholds and promotes the sanctity of all innocent human life from the inception of biological development through natural death…” [emphasis mine]
The Investigative Project on Terrorism states it “has found ample evidence that the [Viva Palestina’s] ultimate objective is political – with the elevation of Hamas at its core. Galloway made that abundantly clear in March 2009, when he defiantly handed a bag of cash to a Hamas minister.”
Endorsing a candidate tied to a Hamas ally is a violation of what the pro-life movement says its stands for and of the Missouri Right to Life’s own Mission Statement. The organization can be forgiven for mistakenly endorsing an Islamist 9/11 Truther. After all, its focus is on pro-life issues and investigating candidates for possible Islamist ties and beliefs is not their mission. However, it must be held accountable for standing by this endorsement after the information has been brought to its attention.
