In an historic announcement, all-women Smith College has announced it will admit men pretending to be women to its school.  All a man has to do is say on his application that he “feels like” a woman, and he is eligible.  However, women who “feel like” they are men are no longer invited to apply to Smith.  It all depends on what you say you feel like the day you fill out your college application.

Other schools like Mount Holyoke and Wellesley are also accepting disguised men.  I suppose the men from Harvard and Yale who go on road trips to pick up women from these schools will have to be extra-careful now!

Rather than criticizing this move, I applaud it!  I think this is great, but just the first step.  If Smith can admit men disguised as women, it can go the next logical step and admit…normal men.

From my own experience in college, here is what I have observed that women are able to do in schools that have men:

1) They can attend classes together.  The presence of men doesn’t seem to prevent women from also attending classes.  They have separate chairs, of course, but often can be seen sitting in the same rows as men without any difficulty or discomfort.  They can even raise their hands to answer or ask questions at the same time that men do.  Hard to believe, but true!

2) They can eat in dining halls together.  I have seen women eating in school dining halls with men, even at the same tables.  The women were able to chew and even swallow without difficulty.

3) They can work together, even in science classes.  I have seen women working with men in laboratories.  Nothing exploded.  All the personal chemistry was kept apart from the class chemistry.

4) Women can compete against men academically without melting.  I have seen this, too.

I think those who say that women “need” schools exclusively of their own are insulting women by saying that they are too fragile to study or compete with men.  I have a higher opinion of women than this.  As for those who say they want to enjoy an education surrounded by other women, I think, for 18-year-old heterosexual women, that’s kind of weird, exclusionary, and clique-ish, and it reminds me of the authoritarian separation of the sexes in radical Islam.

Furthermore, there is no Herland to graduate to where men don’t exist; better to get used to them while they are young and tender.  There is no better time than college to get used to a man’s disarming smile or glistening, bulging biceps before going out for a job in the real world where you have to work closely with them without breaking out in a sweat.
