Under a “Why Condoms?” heading on the project’s website, the center explains:
Our runaway population growth is too often ignored by the public, the media and even the environmental movement. Endangered Species Condoms offer a fun, unique way to break through the taboo and get people talking about the link between human population growth and the wildlife extinction crisis.
Slogans on the condoms include “Don’t go bare . . panthers are rare,” “When you’re feeling tender . . . think about the hellbender,” and “Hump smarter . . . save the snail darter,” according to the artwork featured on the site.
The center’s population and sustainability program official, Leigh Moyer, recently told The College Fix that the condoms have been distributed “on over 750 college and university campuses.”
“This year alone, over 50,000 condoms were distributed by students,” Moyer said.
A press release promoting the program last month boasts that 600,000 condoms have been given away since the launch.
In an e-mail to The Fix, Moyer explained that the center launched the program in 2009 because “even though we at the Center for Biological Diversity are doing great work protecting endangered species and preserving wild spaces, we will always be playing catch up until we addressed the main driver of climate change, desertification, deforestation, ocean acidification, pollution, habitat loss and the sixth mass extinction.”
She was also sure to clarify that the that the center is “not anti-human.”
