Iran hails Jeremy Corbyn for ‘shaking the British ruling class’The Labour leader is lionised in Tehran for taking on the “British aristocracy” – and appreciating Iran’s contribution to peace in the Middle East.
Jeremy Corbyn is a “lifelong human rights activist” who recognises Iran’s ability to “bring peace” to the Middle East, according to a senior ally of the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader.
Syed Salman Safavi, who serves as an aide to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has lavished praise on Mr Corbyn, following the example of Iran’s official media which has chosen to lionise the new Labour leader.
Most British politicians are portrayed in Iran as wicked conspirators, bent on destroying the Islamic Republic at the behest of “Zionists” and “capitalists”. But Mr Corbyn is seen as the great exception.
The Labour leader, who visited Tehran with a parliamentary delegation in January last year, is viewed as a leader with a “different approach” who has already “shaken the most important pillars of class discrimination in Great Britain – the traditional aristocracy”, according to Raja News, a website linked to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the former president.
Mr Safavi, who pays regular visits to London and reliably reflects the views of Iran’s power structure, paid fulsome tribute to Mr Corbyn. “The foundations of Jeremy Corbyn’s political thought are democracy, justice and peace,” wrote the emissary of Iran’s regime.
“Corbyn is opposed to Nato and demands British withdrawal from Nato and calls for nuclear disarmament. Corbyn is a lifelong peace activist, human rights activist, the environment and nuclear disarmament activist and he fights against apartheid and war.”
Turning to Mr Corbyn’s views on foreign policy, Mr Safavi commended the Labour leader for “repeatedly pointing out that one of the mistakes of Britain’s policy in Syria has been not including Iran in the efforts to resolve the crisis in this country”.
Alluding to Mr Corbyn’s description of Hizbollah, the radical Shia movement, and Hamas, the armed Islamist group, as “friends”, Mr Safavi added: “Corbyn believes that the West has ignored the capability of Iran to bring peace in the region. Corbyn believes that to ensure security in the Middle East, Hizbollah, Hamas and Iran need to participate in the dialogue and in the exchange of views.”
As for Mr Corbyn’s political prospects, Mr Safavi is decidedly optimistic. He believes the attacks on the Labour leader reflect the “increasing popularity of Corbyn” who has “already changed the British political landscape”.
Mr Safavi added: “No doubt the ideas of Corbyn will pose a serious challenge to the current government and official institutions of power.” He predicted that by “appealing to public opinion” and “bringing people onto the streets”, Mr Corbyn would be able to “block Bills aimed at protecting the interests of big capitalists in England”.
Writing for IRNA, the official news agency, Mr Safavi felt moved to voice rare praise of British democracy. “It is fair to acknowledge that the election of a socialist and anti-war figure in the UK is a sign of the outstanding capacity of democracy in British society,” he wrote.
Raja News portrayed Mr Corbyn as a dedicated revolutionary, bent on toppling the monarchy and the “ruling class”. Noting the Labour leader’s past appearances on Press TV – the satellite station of Iran’s regime – Raja declared that Mr Corbyn has “made people at higher levels of government, the royal family, lords and capitalists – essentially the people who are ruling over Great Britain – feel worried.“
The website predicted: “It is unlikely that the monarchy would have a future in a country where one of the key parties has become so left wing.”
However, Raja darkly hinted that Mr Corbyn’s life might be at risk. “To shake the most important pillars of class discrimination in Great Britain, the traditional aristocracy, he must become the voice of these new popular demands,” said the website, “if the political assassinations and conspiracies of the ruling class leave him safe”.
