It was another bloody day of attacks on Israelis, but one civilian hero showed just what a handy pair of nunchucks can do against a terrorist.
According to police, a Palestnian man on a Jerusalem bus stabbed an IDF soldier and attempted to steal his gun.
Enter Jerusalem resident Yair Ben Shabat: “I jumped onto the bus and helped them struggle with the terrorist. I took nunchucks out and hit him where I had to for them to be able to pry loose the weapon he held.”
The attacker was shot dead by police. The soldier survived and was in “light-to-moderate condition” at a hospital.
The bus assault was the fourth attack Monday in the span of 12 hours, reported The Jerusalem Post.
A 13-year-old Jewish boy was stabbed nearly a dozen times by 13- and 15-year-old Palestinian cousins at about 3 p.m. It was another case of people stepping in to help as “a driver neutralized the 13-year-old terrorist by ramming his car into him.”
The 15-year-old reportedly stabbed a 24-year-old Jewish man nearby before being shot to death by police. The Jewish boy was in critical condition and the older victim was in serious condition.
At about 2:15 p.m., a Palestinian woman stabbed a Border Police officer at a light rail stop. She was shot by police yet survived. The officer was in fair condition.
The day’s violence began at 9 a.m. when a Palestinian tried to stab a Border Police officer but hit his body armor. The assailant, 18-year-old Mustafa Hatib, was shot and killed.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, who took down a knife-wielding terrorist in February, has encouraged residents with gun permits to carry their weapons for security.
The State Department said Secretary of State John Kerry spoke separately with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday “to express his deep concern over the recent wave of violence and offer his support for efforts to restore calm as soon as possible.”
“He reiterated the importance of strongly condemning violence and combating incitement, and taking affirmative steps to reduce tensions. He again stressed the importance of upholding the status quo in word and deed at the Haram al Sharif/Temple Mount and of preventing inflammatory rhetoric and actions that will increase tensions,” the State Department said. “He made clear he will continue to follow the situation closely and that the U.S. will remain engaged in efforts to restore calm.”
