MARILYN PENN: THE TIMES HAS A HISSY-FIT

Dedicated to the cause of destroying the boundaries that nature has created, the NYT finally jumped the shark in its lead j’accuse editorial of Nov 5th (In Houston, Hate Trumped Fairness,NYT) Those of who still believe that men and women belong in separate but equal public bathrooms are guilty now of the future suicide of a transgender teenager who won’t be able to pee in the designated toilet of the opposite sex. Think about the excrutiating mental anguish for such a person. I can relate to it, along with most other women who wait in long lines outside the ladies’ room in a theater looking longingly at the men’s room as it remains respectfully under-used.
The Times is spitting mad that voters in Houston exercised their democratic right to defeat a law that would have allowed transgenders access to bathrooms matching their subjective views of what gender they are, regardless of their visible plumbing equipment. There is a classic comic scene in which Joey Bishop is caught in his marital bed with another woman. He looks at his furious wife and quickly questions: “Who are you going to believe, me or your eyes?”
Recent concessions and accommodations to transgender behavior exceed those made to any other minority group. In many states, elementary school boys are allowed to attend school in skirts or dresses without any medical or psychiatric vouchers to back up their claims. A young girl wishing to dress as Wonder Woman will be denied that freedom though her self-reporting might be just as valid. Despite evidence that the majority of young people who think they are transgender change their minds by late adolescence, society has been coerced by the LGBT movement to respect the “civil rights” of these troubled young people. We don’t treat cutters or anorexics with similar validation of their illusions, nor would we be as patient with students with other psychological disorders.
The Times’ position is that the rights of all LGBT people are more deserving of legal protection and cultural consideration than the rights of those who have lived in traditional sex and gender roles. The majority must not only give equal rights to minorities – it must muffle its own dissent and discomfort in favor of the minority. If a child or woman is uncomfortable peeing next to men, they would fall into the same category as Jim Crow elders – bigots who deserve our opprobrium. If an adolescent male decides to wear a skirt and call himself Lola, he deserves our full respect and elevation to the lofty category of civil rights activist.
Back in the fifties, there was the phenomenon of multiple personality disorder with psychiatric endorsement and tremendous exposure in movies and tv. Have you heard of any Sybils or Eves lately? Let’s keep those bathrooms separate for at least another few generations until we’re certain that the Caitlin Jenners don’t lose their standing in the same way.
