Twice in the past year, the David Horowitz Freedom Center has placed posters on the campus of San Francisco State University, as well as at a dozen additional schools, exposing the links between the anti-Israel terror group Hamas and the Hamas-funded hate group, Students for Justice in Palestine. These poster campaigns took place last October and this May. Now the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, a group known for supporting Palestinian terrorism and calling for the end of American aid to Israel, is charging that the Freedom Center’s posters are “racist, Islamophobic, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian” and create a “hostile environment” for Muslim and Arab students on the campus.
The Freedom Center’s posters are not aimed at Muslims but at terrorists. The posters placed on campus in October identified BDS activists who are supporting the Hamas-inspired and funded boycott movement. They also charged that the campus group Students for Justice in Palestine supports Hamas terrorists “whose stated goal is the elimination of the Jewish people and the Jewish state.” The Hamas charter states this goal explicitly and SJP receives funding and organizational support from a Hamas-funded front group, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP). SJP also supports the Hamas-inspired Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.
A second poster placed on campus in both Fall and Spring depicts a gun-toting Hamas terrorist holding the strings of a puppet labeled “American Muslims for Palestine” which in turn controls a marionette labeled “Students for Justice in Palestine.” Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is described as “The chief sponsor of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish activities on campus.” Hamas is identified as “A terror organization pledged to wipe out Israel” (a goal explicitly stated in the Hamas charter) while AMP is the “Hamas-created chief organizer and funder of SJP.” All these statements are documented in the Freedom Center pamphlet: SJP: A Campus Front for Hamas Terrorists.
Even in the radicalized world of anti-Israel student movements, SFSU stands out for its extreme actions and rule-breaking and its pro-terrorist sympathies. In April 2016, when Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat appeared on campus, a mob from SFSU’s General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS)—an SJP surrogate—protested Barkat’s visit by shouting “Intifada” and chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!,” itself a call for the obliteration of the Jewish state, forcing the cancellation of his speech. When SFSU President Leslie Wong called tepidly for an investigation into the protestors who shut down Barkat’s speech, GUPS responded by asserting that this request “criminalize[s] anti-racist speech on campus.”
The former president of GUPS, Mohammad G. Hammad, wrote dozens of social media posts threatening violence to pro-Israel students, Israelis, the IDF and others. He also praised Hamas and the violent Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
During an “emergency rally” held by GUPS at SFSU in December 2013, the phrase “My Heroes Have Always Killed Colonizers” was written with chalk on the concrete stage at Malcolm X Plaza. The same phrase, referring to the Hamas assertion that Jews have colonized Arab Palestine and must be exterminated, was also written on a sign at a display table during the “Edward Said Mural Celebration.”

Despite these extreme examples of pro-Hamas sentiment and Jew hatred, the U.S Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation concludes that it is the Freedom Center’s posters that are creating a “hostile environment” at SFSU.
An email sent by Ramah Kudaimi, the group’s Director of Grassroots Organizing, urges recipients to call SFSU President Les Wong and other administrators to demand that the University take action to prevent further posterings—that is, further exercise of the First Amendment—and to push the University to invest more fully in the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas (AMED) program on campus. It even provides a script for potential callers to follow which includes the claim that the Freedom Center’s posters create an “unsafe work and study environment.”
Unsurprisingly, the email closes with an attack on President Trump, who has no bearing on and is not mentioned in the Freedom Center’s poster campaign but appears to serve as the straw man that the left must brandish at every possible opportunity:
“With the continuing rise of Islamophobia and anti-Arab bigotry since Trump came to power and increasing attacks against Palestinian organizing and activists across the country, please take this action today.”

On May 3, 2016, San Francisco State University students found dozens of racist, Islamophobic, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian posters all over SFSU campus – yet another attack by David Horowitz. The campus has been at the center of multiple attacks by him and other anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian groups. Another focus of the attacks has been against Professor Rabab Abdulhadi and the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas (AMED) program, the only ethnic studies program to focus on Arab and Muslim communities in the US. The program has a social justice perspective and centers Palestinian history and culture.
One year later, the SFSU administration has yet to respond to these incidents satisfactorily.

It is unacceptable that after an entire year there has yet to be an adequate response to the hostile environment that has been created for students and professors due to these incidents and lack of response by the university. The administration needs to take proactive steps to end this unsafe work and study environment; invest in AMED as a viable and stable program with tenure track faculty, operating budget and full time staff; and launch an immediate and public investigation by an independent panel into the multiple incidents of attacks against AMED and Professor Abdulhadi.
