The lovely clenched fist signifying violent revolutionary solidarity with Marxists the world over, is cover art from (a) the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA (b) Democratic Socialists of America (c) the Congressional Progressive Caucus d) Sanders for President. Pick one.
Don’t look now but the answer is (c). “The People’s Budget: A Roadmap for the Resistance” is the explicitly collectivist, anti-capitalist budget of the Democratic Party’s largest caucus in Congress: the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC). The CPC includes one US senator (Sanders) and 78 House members. If Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins in November as expected, this member of the Democratic Socialists of America from Da Bronx by way of Westchester will not only find political comrade-ship in the CPC, she will blend right in.
That’s right. The 28-year-old, single-payer, ICE-breaking, rich-soaking, subsidizing, dictating, free-riding, 21st-century Westchester Marxist — sorry, Democratic Socialist — will not be riding to town to storm the citadel; as Garet Garrett explained so lucidly and so depressingly 80 years ago, The Revolution Was.
I find his opening irresistable:
There are those who still think they are holding the pass against a revolution that may be coming up the road. But they are gazing in the wrong direction. The revolution is behind them. It went by in the Night of Depression, singing songs to freedom…
There can be no counter-revolution without considering this “lost” lore, without junking our “court history” and taking off the blinders to study and appreciate the extent to which the USA, especially since its Second Revolution under Franklin Roosevelt, has been ever and ever recreated as a socialistic nation. What Left-wing media bristle at today, I think, is Ocasio-Cortez’s definitional frankess as a “Democratic Socialist.” That’s because this may well alarm and motivate moderate citizens, generally lulled by the familiar party labels, to a point of actually noticing Ocasio-Cortez’s successful demagoguery, her forthright anti-capitalism and matching them to the Democratic Party.
The fact is, far from being that of an outlier, Ocasio-Cortez’s agenda rolls right along in the “Democratic” mainstream, from Obama to Pelosi, from de Blasio to Warren. It is also completely compatible, also overlapping, with the agenda set forth in “The People’s Budget” by the largest caucus of already serving Congressional Democrats. Quite openly, very clearly, they all seek to use the levers of government, the coffers of government, to run absolutely everything and everyone in this country. If elected, Ocasio-Cortez would be just another commissar, I mean, congressperson.
Here’s how the agendas of Ocasio-Cortez and the CPC compare.
1) Ocasio-Cortez wants a single payer health care system that would cover medicine, vision, dental, and mental health care.
The People’s Budget “allows states to transition to single-payer health care systems.”
2) Ocasio Cortez wants “tuition-free public college and trade school.”
“The People’s Budget supports efforts such as Rep. Jayapal’s College for All Act which provides $41 billion per year for states and tribes to eliminate undergraduate tuition and fees at public colleges and universities.
3) She also wants to cancel all student debt.
The People Budget “makes debt free college a reality for all students.”
4) Ocasio-Cortez seeks a Federal Jobs Guarantee, creating a “baseline quality for employments that guarantees a minimum $15 wage (pegged to inflation), full healthcare, and paid child and sick leave for all,” according to her website.
The People’s Budget is sympatico here, too, although it does not stipulate a “Federal Jobs Guarantee.” Nonetheless, CPC Senate member, Sen. Bernie Sanders, recently proposed exactly such a program, harkening back to Progressive Party presidential candidate Vice President Henry Wallace, whose 1948 campaign, by the way, was riddled with Soviet agents and communists.
5) Ocasio-Cortez believes housing is a right and “that Congress must tip the balance away from housing as a gambling chip for Wall Street banks and fight for accessible housing that’s actually within working families’ reach.”
The People’s Budget “fully funds programs to make housing affordable and accessible for all Americans.”
6) Ocasio-Cortez wants to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and “believes there should be a `clear’ path to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants.” (Amnesty) “She also wants more protections for young unauthorized immigrants known as “Dreamers” and immigrants who have temporary protections from deportation.”
The People’s Budget does not call for abolishing ICE (although a number of big Dems have recently seized on the measure) although it prevents it from carrying out its mission:
The CPC Budget believes no funding shall be used to expand President Trump’s border wall and no taxpayer dollars shall be used to conduct immigration raids at sensitive locations, including schools, religious institutions, courthouses, domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, hospitals and health clinics, community centers, and workplaces with active disputes between workers and management.
The balance of Ocasio-Cortez’s immigration dictates, and then some, are further set forth in The People’s Budget:
CPC stands with sanctuary cities and does not support eliminating federal funding for jurisdictions considered sanctuary cities or counties. Through inclusion of Comprehensive Immigration Reform, the CPC Budget affirms that the rights of DACA recipients must be protected.
The People’s Budget also “ends funding for family detention centers that act as a misguided effort to deter Central American families and children … from coming to the United States and prohibits detention quotas. …
The People’s Budget explicitly prohibits funding to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agency to implement President Trump’s executive order banning entry into the U.S. from six Muslim-majority nations and suspension of U.S. refugee programs. …
7) Ocasio-Cortez identifies “climate change” as our No. 1 national security threat (oh, brother) and thus seeks a federal plan (of course) to thwart climate change via “investing” trillions in infrastructure. This is her “New Green Deal.” (f we were better attuned to the socialist revolution packaged in the Old New Deal, this in itself would be a terrifying proposition.
“The Green New Deal we are proposing will be similar in scale to the mobilization efforts seen in World War II or the Marshall Plan,” she recently told HuffPost. “We must again invest in the development, manufacturing, deployment, and distribution of energy, but this time green energy.”
The People’s Budget also lays out a Green boondoggle, half a trillion dollars’ worth our its “historic $2 trillion investment in infrastructure improvements,” taxes on “polluters,” and more.
All that is left for 100 p/c synergy is for the Democrats to admit that they’re really Democratic Socialists, too, and rename their “progressive” caucus, the Democratic Central Committee. When Ocasio-Cortez upset Old Bull Rep. Patrick Crowley, she may have blown up the media and Internet. But she also blew her “Democratic” comrades’ cover — if anyone is still looking.
