Argentina and other Latin American countries to follow Brazil in recognising Palestinian state on 1967 lines
In what may yet emerge as one of the most significant and worrying developments in recent years, reports are coming out that Argentina and several other Latin American states are on the verge of recognising a Palestinian state along 1967 lines. This would follow Brazil’s decision to follow such a course of action last week (see previous entry).
The BBC Monitoring Service produced the following report based on the Palestinian Authority’s WAFA website.
From BBC Monitoring:
“Yasir Abd-Rabbuh, secretary of PLO Executive Committee, has said that the Brazilian recognition of the independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borderline has encouraged other countries to recognize the Palestinian state.
“In a statement he made to the Voice of Palestine radio this morning, Abd-Rabbuh said that President of Argentina Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has stressed, in a phone conversation she held with President Mahmud Abbas on 5 December evening, that her country intends to recognize the independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borderline.
“He added that President Kirchner told the president that recognizing the Palestinian state is not only a political act but rather a moral one.
“Abd-Rabbuh considered that the Brazilian and Argentinean recognition of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borderline will encourage other countries to do the same.
“I”t is worth mentioning that Brazil had announced, on 3 December, its recognition of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borderline.
“Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated the stance in a letter to President Mahmud Abbas received by PNA Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki”.
Update: The Chinese news agency Xinhua is also reporting that the same Palestinian official believes several Latin American states will move along such lines “within the coming few hours.”

December 6th, 2010 at 5:00 pm One would think that it would be time to highlight the political motivations involved for these countries to make such a decision. But that assumes the media within the society that would be making that assessment are serving truth and morality – which is why for sure we won’t be getting it from the BBC.I notice they haven’t even mentioned Brasil’s recognition of Palestine yet, never mind Argentina. Probably thinking how to spin it for best effect, otherwise why should The Telegraph already have covered it?

December 6th, 2010 at 6:54 pm Amazing how Brazil can decide that the 1967 “border” which is actually the 1949 armistice lines of a cease fire can serve as a border defining two states while one side intransigently refuses to recognize the other.
