Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Has Exposed Media’s Moral Vacuum By Mackenzie France
After mounting domestic pressure and repeated attacks on Israel from the international community, Israel has had no other recourse but to accept a ceasefire deal with Hamas. The terms of this deal reveal that this is not a victory, but a compromise, a necessary evil that the people of Israel accepted to bring their hostages home.
The last few Sundays saw emotive scenes as some of the remaining Israeli hostages were reunited with their families in accordance with the terms of the ceasefire deal. This moment of joyful celebration has been tainted by biased media coverage and obsequious comments from Western leaders who have disregarded the plight of these hostages for months. Indeed, a casual observer – say, someone who catches the news for a few minutes a day – could be forgiven for thinking that the release of the Israeli hostages has been part of some agreed-upon “like-for-like” exchange.
In a statement on Jan. 19, U.K. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the release of British-Israeli citizen, Emily Damari, as “long-overdue.” This comes, naturally, after months of totally ignoring the plight of the hostages on the world stage and instructing the U.K. to vote for ceasefire proposals not tied to their release at the UN.
Meanwhile, Western media coverage has done a huge disservice to innocent prisoners like Emily by equating their suffering to the just captivity of violent terrorists in Israeli jails.
Headlines from major outlets like the BBC describe “jubilant scenes” in the West Bank following the release of “Palestinian prisoners”; the Guardian reported how “Freed Palestinians and Israelis reunite[d]with families” after the releases on Jan. 26.
This depiction of the “prisoner exchange” glosses over the reality that Israel is being forced to liberate violent terrorist offenders in order to restore innocent men and women to their families.
The overwhelming bias of these headlines is surely not accidental. Delving into many of these articles closely reveals more of the truth. Take the aforementioned BBC article, for instance, where we find out that over half of the 200 prisoners released over the weekend of Jan. 25 were serving life sentences. The BBC made a point of giving Mohammed al-Tous, aged 69, a special mention as the oldest prisoner released in the deal. According to the BBC he was arrested while “fighting Israeli forces” in 1985. As with many of these supposedly unjustly treated prisoners, some research reveals that al-Tous was arrested for multiple terror offenses, organizing attacks on Israelis “in and around Jerusalem” in 1985. Of course, most people will never look into these names, and perhaps the BBC knows this. Reporting like this only serves to morally equate Hamas and Israel.
Al-Tous is by no means the most heinous criminal that Israel has released to restore their innocent hostages back to their families. The Jewish Chronicle and others have reported extensively on the types of people whose liberation Hamas has demanded. Also slated for release is Mahmud Abu Warda, responsible for the murder of 45 Israelis in two separate bus bombings in Jerusalem in 1996.
For international media to suggest that murderers like these have the same right to rejoin their families as innocent women like Emily Damari, who was abducted from her home at the idyllic Kfar Aza, is beyond insulting. This kind of reporting on the ceasefire deal is the latest iteration of international attempts to equate Israel with its terrorist enemies and denigrate their international image.
Whether through the ICC, the UN, or the international press, attempts to draw a moral equivalence between Hamas and Israel merely run cover for the worst crimes of Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups. Make no mistake, Israel fought yet another existential war between October 2023 and January 2025. Unless Hamas is removed from their governing role in Gaza, the prisoners released from Israeli jails will become the architects of the next October 7.
There is no prisoner exchange or hostage swap in Gaza. Israel is yet again appeasing the demands of terrorists to secure the lives of its citizens. It is the responsibility of all supporters of peace in the Middle East to not allow Hamas to gaslight us, and the global community must ensure that Israel’s sacrifices are not in vain.
