CLAUDIA ROSETT: HIDING OUT IN HONG KONG?

http://pjmedia.com/claudiarosett/hiding-out-in-hong-kong-how-do-you-do-that/?print=1 For days, we have been hearing that the leaker of National Security Agency surveillance secrets, Edward Snowden, is hiding out in Hong Kong. Or, to put it in a variety of other ways — all culled from the recent news — he has gone to ground, dropped out of sight, is in hiding, disappeared, […]

How to Understand Islamism: Read What Its Leaders Actually Say: Barry Rubin

http://pjmedia.com/barryrubin/2013/06/13/how-to-understand-islamism-read-what-its-leaders-really-say/

To read Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s 1984 book Islamic Education and Hasan al-Banna is to get an Islamic education. Nobody should be allowed to talk about Islam or political Islamism without having read this or similar texts. Just as Marx claimed in the Communist Manifesto of his movement, the Islamists, too, disdain to conceal their aims. Yet those who don’t read their actual texts, speeches, and debates and only read their public-relations disinformation know nothing.

It’s easy to see why al-Qaradawi is the leading Sunni Islamist thinker in the world today, the spiritual guide behind Egypt’s Islamist revolution. He knows how to express his ideas clearly and persuasively. Here is his depiction of the Muslim world before the rise of revolutionary Islamism to power and prominence:

Just imagine a waste land which has no sign of leaf or tulip or hyacinth far and wide, but which blossoms forth immediately with the first sprinkle of the rains of blessing, and fields of flowers begin to bloom. Lifeblood starts circulating in its lifeless body. …

The condition of the Muslim nation was like a wasteland in the middle of the fourteenth century Hijri (mid-nineteenth century). The pillars of caliphate had broken which was the last display of unity under the flag of Islamic belief. Islamic countries were breathing their last under the talons of capitalist countries like Britain, France and others, so much so that Holland, whose population was [small] dominating over the ten million strong population of Indonesia with the help of force and weapon. It had spoilt the face of Islamic decrees and putting Quran behind was busily engaged in its disrespect. Blind imitation of self-made Western laws and appreciation of foreign values had set over the lives of Muslims. The youths and lovers of new culture who were bearers of the so-called modern culture were particular victims of this. Western domination upon the field of education and means of communication was producing heaps of Westernized “Khan Bahadur” (honorable people) whose names were no doubt Islamic but brains were West-bred.

SILVIO CANTO: JUNE 12, 1987 WAS A GREAT DAY FOR FREEDOM

http://www.americanthinker.com/printpage/?url=http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2013/06/june_121987_-_a_great_day_for_freedom.html
Our #1 son was a few weeks old and I was sitting in the living room getting ready to watch the late Peter Jennings and the evening news. (Pre-Fox Report with Charles Krauthammer days.)

There it was! A US President challenging the Soviet Union to “tear down this wall”:

“Reagan’s challenge came during a visit to West Berlin. With the Berlin Wall as a backdrop, Reagan declared, “There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace.” He then called upon his Soviet counterpart: “Secretary General Gorbachev, if you seek peace–if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe–if you seek liberalization: come here, to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Addressing the West Berlin crowd, Reagan observed, “Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar.””

It was Reagan at his best. It was also the kind of “in your face” statement that the Soviets understood.

As a product of the Cold War, or a kid who grew up in a communist country and came to the US looking for freedom, I reacted with total joy. It was marvelous watching a US president calling communism what it really was – a corrupt, undemocratic and authoritarian regime that built walls to keep people from seeking freedom.

Reagan spoke to me that day. He obviously spoke to lots of people behind the Iron Curtain. His words had the same kind of reaction as “the evil empire” remark of a few years before. The words terrorized the “protocol obsessed types” in the State Department but put a smile on the face of those who were living under communism.

No one knew 26 years sgo yesterday that the wall would collapse two years later. Or that the USSR would become Russia at the end of 1991.

What we did know was that President Reagan had exposed the injustice of that wall and that the inhumane Soviet regime was destined to fail.

JAMES TARANTO: Not-for-Profit Propaganda What is the California Endowment?

A reader received a curious item in the mail the other day: A four-page advertising brochure touting ObamaCare. “Obamacare is working,” the cover announces: “NOW IT’S UP TO YOU.” Below that exhortation is a photo of the president grinning as broadly as a Pepsodent pitchman.

The purpose of the ad is not just to promote ObamaCare but to urge California’s lawmakers to “finish the job for the millions of Californians who won’t be covered, many because of their immigration status.” The ad features photos of two other politicians, Assembly Speaker John Perez and United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, with quotes supporting the goal.

There’s a tear-off postpaid card with an already-checked check box alongside the attestation “I believe everyone should have access to affordable, preventive health care” and room for the recipient to fill in his personal information. At the bottom of the card–a nice touch–is a line of seven faces: six young people and one old dude. The group is so ethnically diverse, it even includes a kid from Cheron.

The return address identifies the sender as “The California Endowment.” What is the California Endowment? At its website, one can glean the answer from an overview of its history and activities, as well as its 428-page tax filing for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012.

The endowment is a nonprofit corporation, exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. That means that its contributions as well as most of its operations are untaxed. But if you’d like to make a contribution, you’re out of luck: “Thank you for the generous offer, but we do not accept donations,” the website announces.

SURVEILLANCE AND ITS DISCONTENTS ****

In 1998, after Osama bin Laden orchestrated the bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, FBI agents were deployed to collect evidence so they could issue a warrant for his arrest. Twelve years later, Seal Team Six raided his Abbottabad compound, shot and killed him and his guards and then dumped his corpse into the sea.

The difference is that the U.S. is now waging a war on terror, and not a metaphorical war like LBJ’s on poverty. This is a crucial distinction that has been lost amid the growing ruction over the National Security Agency surveillance programs. Another point lost amid the uproar is that the safety of citizens is the first—and in our view, the principal—obligation of government.

In our age of proliferating nuclear weapons and genetically engineered biotoxins, a country serious about self-preservation must detect potential threats and prevent attacks before they occur, not prosecute them as crimes after the fact. The architecture to protect civilians must therefore include signals intelligence, or surveillance, to obtain actionable information about the plans, actions and capabilities of the decentralized and lethal networks that are al Qaeda and its franchises.

It has been instructive to watch liberals rediscover that the Constitution limits government power, at least on civil liberties. Too bad they show no such compunction about economic liberty. The ObamaCare mandate-tax that commands Americans to buy a private product is far more offensive to the Constitution than NSA reading the emails of terrorists overseas.

The regulatory agencies claim—and use—the power to seize property and control individual conduct. The very administration of the entitlement state depends on tracking (Social Security numbers), data-processing (Medicare benefits) and individual scrutiny (tax audits). The IRS knows far more about American citizens than the NSA does, and while there is much speculation about the potential for surveillance abuse, we now have real evidence of corruption at the IRS. So which is the greater scandal?

JED BABBIN: HOW NOT TO BUY A FIGHTER

http://spectator.org/archives/2013/06/13/how-not-to-buy-a-fighter It’s probably easier to put a man on Mars than it is to please the military with a new fighter jet. Every time someone tries—as our worst defense secretary, Robert McNamara, did in the 1960s—the project fails. Invariably, what works for one of the three branches—Air Force, Navy, Marines—fails to meet the needs of […]

DID YOU KILL ANY BABIES BRUCE?

Click here: “Did you kill any babies, Bruce?” – Maggie’s Farm

http://maggiesfarm.anotherdotcom.com/archives/22346-Did-you-kill-any-babies,-Bruce.html

“Did you kill any babies, Bruce?” As we lay in bed on New Year’s Eve 1970, this is what the girl asked who a friend had introduced me to when I returned from Vietnam a couple of months before. I got up and drove home in the snowy streets from Queens to Brooklyn. I didn’t even try to date another girl for almost a year after. But, I moved past it and didn’t dwell on that night.

Some returned soldiers and Marines had worse experiences and some had better and almost all just blended back in after an initial adjustment. Studies show that most were more successful in their lives than their non-serving peers. But, what the major media and liberal opinion-setters painted was an image, usually grossly ignorant and mendacious, of a mentally and morally scarred Vietnam veteran. The purpose was to reduce support for the US commitment to South Vietnam. It took several decades before this image from the Left was reversed and due pride in veterans’ service returned to America. Yet, that erroneous and harmful image of Vietnam veterans still lingers in many minds.

Aside from the opprobrium poured upon us Vietnam veterans from the Left in the pop culture and academia, the goal of our war was lost and we had little reason to exhibit pride in the outcome of our service as millions of IndoChinese were murdered by the conquering communists in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The perfidy of so many of our Senators and Congressmen, and the indifference of most opinion-leaders, only deepened the alienation from authority, and increased the vulnerability to the anti-Vietnam messagers.

That’s what the fall of Saigon has to do with the life paths of Vietnam veterans.

JANET LEVY: “SHOULDER TO SHOULDER” INTERFAITH COALITION WITH ENEMIES

Shoulder-to-Shoulder is an “interfaith” coalition that includes unindicted co-conspirator and Muslim Brotherhood front, the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Arab American Institute, the Universal Muslim Association of America (UMAA) and over 20 national Christian and Jewish religious groups. The Coalition tools send their religious leaders into the community to speak about “anti-Muslim bigotry,” work with Congress to fight “anti-Muslim sentiment” and seek media coverage for their work against “Islamophobia.”
No word on any efforts to promote religious practice for Jews and Christians in Muslim countries OR to extinguish the persecution and murder of Jews and Christians in the Middle East and North Africa OR to combat Muslim Jew hatred and anti-Christianism in the West.
Shoulder-to-Shoulder offers strategies to fight controversies such as building a mosque at Ground Zero in New York City (the despicable, insensitive Muslim Brotherhood attempt to celebrate their 9/11 “victory”), rail against threats to burn the Koran and fight against legislation to preserve Constitutional Law in America (and prevent a medieval, supremacist, totalitarian doctrine – Islamic shariah – from destroying our great republic).
Their programs include the Christian-Muslim Consultative Group to promote “interfaith” and “social justice” issues, Daughters of Abraham to bring Christian, Jewish and Muslim women “together” (to model burkas, show off bruises and compare FGM scars), Faith Shared to “unite in prayer and understanding,” the New Evangelical Partnership Film Festival to fight “Islamophobia,” NewGround to respond to the “climate of tension and mistrust between Jews and Muslims in Los Angeles and beyond, Odyssey Networks for youth to exploit their personal experiences with “Islamophobia,” Our Better Angels to engender respect for Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions, the Pittsburgh Area Jewish Committee to promote a “pluralistic” (read “Islamic”) society, Prepare New York to push New Yorkers to “get over” 9/11, Project Interfaith, Ravel/Unravel Community Mosaic Video Project to promote Islam, South West Interfaith Team, The Safe Nation Collaborative to “bridge the gap” between law enforcement and American Muslim communities (to put an end to surveillance and anti-jihad efforts), Torture Awareness Month, the Tri Faith Initiative, United in Peace, Healing with Hope, WMATA to stop “hateful” ads (a.k.a. ads that tell the TRUTH about Islam) and Weekend of Twinning in which Christian and Jewish organizations in 26 countries delude themselves into thinking that Islam is “the religion of peace.”

SARAH HONIG: LEVI ESHKOL…PLUCKY IN PAJAMAS

http://sarahhonig.com/2013/06/14/another-tack-plucky-in-pajamas/

In our collective memory Levi Eshkol is perceived as a weak, even a vacillating prime minister. Perhaps this was unjust already back on the eve of the Six Day War, when his image became thus ingrained in our popular lore. Certainly, compared to many of his successors in ensuing decades, Eshkol can be portrayed as a resolute upholder of Israeli national pride – especially when clad in pajamas.

Merely by refusing to change into proper daytime attire, Eshkol struck a plucky patriotic pose. In his humble night clothes he evinced more audacity than most of the wishy-washy variety that followed him in office.

Eshkol took his steadfast stand in the ungodly hours of May 27, 1967, when Soviet Ambassador Dmitri Chuvakhin arrived on the PM’s doorstep and demanded to wake him up to deliver an urgent message from Moscow. The envoy insisted he couldn’t wait till dawn.

Rather than be overawed and flustered, Eshkol chose to deliberately express his defiance of what was surely a bullying superpower diktat. He told his bureau chief, veteran diplomat Aviad Yaffe, that “under no circumstances do I have any intention of getting dressed for him” [Chuvakhin].

Those were the suffocating super-tense days in which the Arabs boasted belligerently that they were about to annihilate the Jewish state, after Egypt had blockaded the Tiran Straits and ignominiously tossed the UN peacekeepers out of Sinai.

Surrealistically, as the scary siege against Israel intensified, both the State Department and the White House “couldn’t find” copies of America’s ten-year-old guarantees to prevent precisely such a scenario. This was despite the fact that these very much-publicized guarantees were what swayed Israel, under Washington’s aggressive prodding, to withdraw from the Sinai in 1957.

Israel seemed alone, callously abandoned by its allies and coldly intimidated by the Russians. Things looked grim. How today’s crop of Israeli politicians would have coped with such extreme challenges is a matter of conjecture. But Eshkol stood his ground in his PJs and in fluent Russian rejected the stern warnings against a preemptive strike delivered by the emissary dispatched to harass him in the middle of the night.

SUPERMENSCH? THE MAN OF STEEL AND HIS JEWISH CREATORS: RAFAEL MEDOFF

http://www.algemeiner.com/2013/06/13/superman-saving-his-jewish-creators/#

JNS.org – Millions of Americans will flock to movie theaters this week to see “Man of Steel,” in which Superman will once again be called upon to save the world from some menace. But back in 1975, Superman’s Jewish creators found themselves broke, nearly homeless, and desperately in need a hero of their own. It’s a story with the pathos and drama of a comic book adventure—and it has a happy ending.

As teenagers growing up in Cleveland’s mostly-Jewish Glenville neighborhood in the 1930s, writer Jerry Siegel and his artist friend Joe Shuster created Superman, the mighty costumed hero who has been a fixture of American pop culture ever since.

Siegel later wrote that he and Shuster were influenced by a combination of “being unemployed and worried during the Depression and knowing hopelessness and fear,” and “hearing and reading of the oppression and slaughter of helpless, oppressed Jews in Nazi Germany.” The Superman character emerged from their “great urge to help the downtrodden masses, somehow.”

Comics historians have compared Superman’s origins to both the Jewish immigrant experience and the biblical story of young Moses. With the planet Krypton on the verge of destruction, desperate parents send their infant off in a rocket ship to Earth, where heis raised by strangers—Jonathan and Martha Kent taking the role of Pharoah’s daughter. Whether disguised as the Midwestern newspaper reporter Clark Kent, or as an Egyptian prince whose Jewish roots are hidden, our hero would prefer to quietly assimilate into his surroundings but his outrage at injustice propels him into the role of rescuer.

Not realizing the fortune Superman would reap, Siegel and Shuster sold their first 13-page Superman comic strip, and the rights to the character to National Periodicals (later known as DC Comics) for $130.
