SCANLON: Picking seniors’ pockets
I’m going to come right out and say it: AARP is about money and power. That’s all it’s interested in. Formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, the nation’s largest seniors group hasn’t cared about its elderly members’ well-being for eons. It’s been too busy building a financial empire. Read more…

http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/ A Scientific Romance of the Year 2024 In the sixteenth year of Obama, Marc and Julie obtained a carbon pass and set off on a light rail journey in a comfortable semi-transparent carriage traveling at a top speed of 30 kilometers per hour whose motive power came entirely from sunshine. As it was a […]
Palestinian Arabs prefer to buy Blue and White!

Imad is a manufacturer of soap and detergents in Bethlehem. His products used to be labeled in Hebrew but in a fit of patriotism he replaced all the labels with Arabic-only labels.
And his sales plummeted.
Imad says: “I get frustrated when a customer comes to me, asking: ‘Where’s the Israeli soap?’ All this time they are thinking the producers and manufacturers of these products they consume in their homes are Israelil this is really frustrating.”
Imad says his products are much less expensive than their Israeli counterparts.
“I am surprised of the Palestinian consumer, who deals with the products only by their source, and is ready to buy expensive Israeli products but does not even consider our own national product that is sold at reasonable prices.”
http://pjmedia.com/andrewmccarthy/2012/05/27/christie-administration-in-nj-concludes-nypd-surveillance-was-legal/ As a number of readers are aware, I’ve had more than my fair share to say about New Jersey Governor Chris Christie of late, much of it on the negative side of the ledger — although I’d caution that that “ledger” is more about whether he is a “consistent conservative” (no) than about his […]
http://phillipsblog.dailymail.co.uk/2012/05/zionism-and-bigotry.html In the wake of the festival of Shavuot, when Jews have been celebrating the giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai from where he presented them to the Jewish people camped at its foot, I have been brooding over the fact that Zionism has become a dirty word in Britain and […]
http://www.prudenpolitics.com/newsletter?utm_source=P&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=3672&P+Auto+1= The scholars and wordsmiths at the Department of Homeland Security leave everyone who aspires to good citizenship perfectly speechless. Some of the wordsmiths put together a manual for agents who track the Internet, looking for evil-doers and those who aspire to evil-doing. These agents are assigned to pick up suspicious words for further investigation. […]
http://www.forbes.com/sites/larryolmsted/2012/05/25/lets-not-forget-what-memorial-day-weekend-is-really-all-about-the-high-cost-of-freedom/
I’ve gotten tons of press releases in the past few weeks pitching stories on steaks, cookbooks and barbecue accessories, reminding me that Memorial Day weekend is the start of “grilling season.” Likewise I’ve gotten sun-related pitches reminding me that Memorial Day weekend is the start of “beach season.” I’ve also gotten pitches tied to the Indy 500 car race, the world’s largest single day sporting event, always held on Memorial Day weekend (unless it rains). Elsewhere in the world of sports, the Senior PGA Championship is being played this weekend in Michigan.
Grilling burgers? Going to the beach? Sports on TV?
Memorial Day is about none of these things.
It is a Federal holiday honoring members of the United States Armed Forces who have died in war or while otherwise serving their country. Our country. It began as Decoration Day following the Civil War, because the living would honor the dead by decorating their graves. This tradition endures, especially at military cemeteries like Arlington National Cemetery where an American flag is placed on every single grave. In non-military cemeteries the fallen are likewise honored, usually by friends and relatives, but anyone is free to pay their respects to those who made the greatest possible sacrifice so that the rest of us can continue to do what we enjoy doing. The traditional time to visit cemeteries or war memorials is at 3PM local time on Memorial Day, which is Monday. U.S. flags will be flown at half-mast until noon. According to the US Government’s website, you can also “Pay tribute to the U.S. men and women who died during military service by observing a minute of silence at 3:00 PM, local time.”

Here’s a suggestion for Memorial Day reading, if you’re going to a beach or simply resting in your backyard enjoying the good weather. Buy the May 28th issue of The New Yorker (yes, I know it usually is knee-jerk leftist when it comes to politics), which features an amazing article by author David Grann called “TheYankee Comandante: A Story of love, revolution, and betrayal [1].”
Grann’s reportage is so good that you will think you are reading good fiction — either a thriller or an adventure story — except that he is telling the very real story of the late William Alexander Morgan, who, as a young man in his 20s, went off to Cuba in 1957 to fight alongside Fidel Castro and his rebels in the guerrilla army seeking to bring down the regime of Fulgencio Batista, the long-ruling authoritarian and corrupt leader of Cuba. I hope that someone gets this article to Andy Garcia and that this Cuban-American exile actor considers optioning it for a film before someone else does.
http://www.romirowsky.com/11757/palestinian-refugees-forever Palestinian identity is founded in on three parts. One is that resistance to Israel is permanent and holy. Another is that Palestinians are, individually and communally, refugees, made so at the hands of Israel. The third part is that the world, specifically the United Nations and Western countries, must support these refugees until […]
