Many good columns have been written about the evil secret conference which was planned by SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) Adolf Eichmann, Officer for Jewish Affairs to implement Hitler’s policy that Europe should be freed of Jews. Among those present in a lakeside villa expropriated from its Jewish owners were:

Wilhelm Stuckart, a lawyer representing the Interior Ministry and co-author of the anti-semitic Nuremberg laws

Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger, deputy head of the Reich Chancellery

Gerhard Klopfer, a lawyer from the Nazi Party Chancellery

Martin Luther, Foreign Ministry liaison to the SS

Heinrich Müller, Gestapo Chief and Eichmann’s immediate superior

Reinhard Heydrich, Heinrich Himmler’s second-in-command in the SS, who opened the meeting on the final solution.

The best documentary on this infamous gathering, available on Netflix is “Conspiracy” a BBC/HBO television film from 2001.

Labadie, Mo. — It was bravery of the highest order: William Shemin defied German machine gun fire to sprint across a World War I battlefield and pull wounded comrades to safety. And he did so no fewer than three times.

Then, with the platoon’s senior soldiers wounded or killed, the 19-year-old — who later attended and played football at Syracuse University — took over command of his unit and led it to safety, even after a bullet pierced his helmet and lodged behind his ear.

Yet Shemin never earned the nation’s highest military citation, the Medal of Honor — a result, many suspected, of the fact that he was Jewish at a time when discrimination ran rampant throughout the U.S. military.

Now, nearly four decades after his death, Shemin might finally get that medal, thanks to the tireless efforts of his daughter, whose long quest to see her father decorated also opens the door for other overlooked Jewish veterans of the Great War.

“A wrong has been made right here,” said Shemin’s daughter, Elsie Shemin-Roth, 82, of Labadie, Mo., a small town about 40 miles southwest of St. Louis.

Ten years ago this week, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped by Islamic terrorists in Pakistan, after he had been lured into what he thought was an interview with Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani about the links between al Qaeda and the “shoe bomber” Richard Reid. The shadowy Pakistani group that kidnapped Pearl accused him of being a spy for the CIA, and made several demands, including the release of Pakistani detainees from Guantanamo. Nine days later, Pearl was murdered and beheaded, and on February 21, a video was released called “The Slaughter of the Spy-Journalist, the Jew Daniel Pearl.” The footage showed Pearl’s “confession” and brutal decapitation, interspersed with images of dead Muslims, George Bush shaking hands with Ariel Sharon, and Palestinians allegedly killed by Israeli Defense Forces, including 12-year-old Muhammad al-Dura, whose death was later exposed as a Palestinian fabrication. Later, captured 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would brag to interrogators that he personally had beheaded Pearl. As for his abductor, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, though tried and condemned to death, still lives in a Pakistani jail cell, from which according to some reports he has planned other terrorist attacks.

The killing of Pearl concentrated much of what Andrew McCarthy calls the “willful blindness” of many in the West to the Islamic roots of the perpetrators’ violence. At the time, most of the media mainly decried Pearl’s death because he was a reporter. Worse yet were the comments that scolded the terrorists for not understanding that American journalists are neutral observers whose impartiality could help them get their story out. As a New York Times editorial put it,

Of Horses And Jews (Dead Versus Live)…

I’m upset.

My wife, Elisabeth, was a 4-H owner of horses; my daughter-in-law, Isabelle, still loves to ride; and I have always admired them as one of G_d’s magnificently noble creatures.

I really wanted to see Steven Spielberg’s movie, War Horse.

Unfortunately, after what I’ve recently learned, I won’t.

No doubt, Steven won’t miss the cost of my and my wife’s theater tickets–as he didn’t when I refused to see his earlier Munich as well. Still, I don’t have to support such stuff.

I’m getting ahead of myself, however, so please let me explain…

Like millions of other Jews around the world, I’m a “survivor.”

I’m one of those who escaped the Holocaust–the predictable endpoint of a road carefully paved and prepared for millennia. Indeed, scholarly estimates place the number of Jews massacred–often for “holy” reasons–prior to the 20th century to be at least that of those slaughtered in the age of Zyklon B gas.

No, I didn’t live in Europe during the 1940s…I was born in the U.S.A. on President Harry Truman’s birthday in 1948–just several days before Israel’s own rebirth.

On my Dad’s side (of blessed memory), we’ve been in America since the late 19th century. My Grandfather and Father were vets of World War I and II respectively (along with many other members of my family).

But, on my Mother’s side, her Mother–my Grandmother–escaped the pogroms of Eastern Europe just before the rise of Hitler in Germany. Most of her family stayed behind and became Nazi statistics. Had Grandma not made it here, I would not be writing this essay right now…

Despite the deniers seeking to murder the victims yet a second time–like Israel’s alleged “peace partner,” Mahmoud Abbas, and Iran’s Ahmadinejad–it’s legit, in most circles, these days to cry at least crocodile tears for Auschwitz’ dead Jews. Even school curricula now often include Holocaust studies. I’ve been nervous about this and expressed my fears to a friend, a non-Jewish lady teaching the subject.

Too many folks, you see, want to hear that the Nazis were from Mars instead of being real people who went to church on Sundays and turned Jews into lampshades and soap on Mondays.

The threat by the Islamic regime in Iran to close down the Strait of Hormuz and of Revolutionary Guards Navy boats harassing U.S. Navy ships in the Persian Gulf has caused President Obama to send secret messages to the regime stating his concerns over the closure of the strait and the possibility of an accidental war.

Since then, Iranian officials have been revealing the contents of President Obama’s letter to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which indicates a deep desire by the U.S. president for a dialogue with the radical leaders of Iran. However, on Saturday, Iranian officials also claimed that an oral message by Obama delivered through the Swiss ambassador in Tehran is even more revealing than the letter delivered to the Iranian supreme leader.
