Colin Powell recently attacked election integrity and claimed there was no voter fraud. That’s dishonest and false, but it was good enough to get a spot on CBS’s Face the Nation this Sunday. His ticket to the show:

You can say what you like, but there is no voter fraud.

Colin Powell should learn a bit about people like Melowese Richardson, Lessadolla Sowers, Sonia Solis, Eric Haynes, Linda Wells, Giancarlo Sopo, John Moretina, Clara Moretina, Ernest Johnson, Kaarbo (aka Shawn Marie Melton), Jose Antonio Ramirez-Velasquez, Michael Marshall, Marguerite Kloos, Dilsa Maria Saddler, Rep. Stephen “Stat” Smith (D-Mass.), Leonard Brown, Chad Gigowski, Andrew Shepherd, Brittany Rainey, Caitlin Haycock, Brian Uecker, Fozia Nawaz, Bill Di Giorgio, Anna Nicole Nelson, Carlton Kaarbo and Richard Alverson.

And these are just charges and convictions over the last few months. But I’ll bet Colin Powell never heard of any of these criminals. He’s simply in service of the Democratic Left now, and that gets him a spot on CBS’s Face the Nation

Thus sang Joni Mitchell in “Woodstock,” a song of haunting beauty that she wrote in 1969 at the height of Vietnam War protest. Like all peaceniks, she assumes that “our nation” (technically, she was Canadian) is responsible for the hostilities, and if its bombers would just turn into butterflies, peace would reign.
In many places in Israel — a small, cramped country — you can hear the bombers in the sky on training flights. It most piques your interest when you hear them at night. Usually they’re just practicing night flying, but it could mean there’s been—or is going to be—an incident somewhere.

After a great deal of fuss about national security and terrorism, sentence was passed and Bradley Manning, the man at the center of the storm who used a Lady Gaga CD to smuggle out classified information, announced that what he really wanted was to live as a woman.

Posting a photo wearing the least convincing wig outside of clown college, Manning announced that from now on, his name will be Chelsea.

Life might have been simpler for everyone if Manning had just gone straight to the bad wig. In the age of Obama, his right to pretend to be a woman would have been protected with more vigor than the lives of American soldiers serving in Afghanistan.
But that’s not what Manning really wanted.

In 1974, Jerry Dean Michael, a mentally ill ex-con and con-artist, put on a wig and pretended to be Liz Carmichael, the widow of a NASA engineer with a car that could 70 miles to the gallon.

“I’ll knock the hell out of Detroit,” Michael declared, in his persona as Liz Carmichael. “I’ll rule the auto industry like a queen.” That last line was a joke that it took a while for anyone to get.

Liz Carmichael and his plans to rule Detroit, now a place filled with feral dogs and politicians which probably would have been better off ruled by a lunatic queen with a fiberglass car for a throne, received nearly as much attention then as Bradley Manning did now. Unfortunately Liz’s car, that was going to revolutionize the automotive industry could no more run, than Michael or Bradley could become women.

Michael fled, was arrested, released on bail, fled again and was arrested living, once again, under a female name.

Having just returned from a two-day workshop on our new “Let’s Talk About It:Muslim Journeys theme, Literary Reflections,” I’m enthusiastic about getting the word out, as well as introducing you to the five books in the series. Dr. Nancy Ciccone, chair of the English Department at the University of Colorado, Denver, and I are working together for the third time on a “Let’s Talk about It” series.
Nancy and I didn’t have to travel far, this time — just to the Grand Hyatt in downtown Denver — to hear project scholars develop the content, andcoordinators from the American Library Association recommend effective ways to implement the project. We joined more than 75 representatives from other libraries around the country who received this “Let’s Talk About It” grant, many of whom were accompanied by their local scholars.

In a recent column, I concluded with a passing reference to the city of Ariel, a Jewish enclave that juts into the West Bank 10 miles beyond the Green Line. The column dealt with boycotts, and specifically with the EU’s recent announcement that it will withhold any scientific collaboration, investment or the awarding of grants to institutions with “direct or indirect” ties to settlements in the West Bank, Gaza or East Jerusalem. I concluded the column by saying that “I do not call for a boycott of Ariel; like many in Israel’s cultural community, I just won’t go there.”
Upon reflection, I think those words are flip. Upon reflection, Israel’s anti-boycott law notwithstanding, I call for a boycott of Ariel. Specifically, I believe American Jews visiting Israel should stay away from the city, treat it as an offense against peace.
I can hear the gasps of incredulity. There were times when Arab spokespeople refused to share a platform with Israelis, and while the situation has improved somewhat, Israel is and has been so often the target of boycotts, both personal and governmental, calling for a boycott seems out of synch with even a vague hope for reconciliation between Jews and Arabs. Boycotts, by an large, draw a decisively negative response from supporters of Israel.
Yet boycotts have a long and often honorable history. Likely the most famous boycott in recent American history remains the Montgomery bus boycott, which also marked Martin Luther King’s emergence as the key black leader of his day. The year was 1955, the date was December 1st. When Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat so that a white passenger could sit down, a black woman named Ann Robinson, a professor of English at Alabama State, the youngest of 12 siblings and the first to have gone to college, convened the Women’s Political Council, most of whose members were active in Martin Luther King’s Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, and that very night they mimeographed a leaflet that said, “The next time it may be you, or you or you. This woman’s case will come up Monday. We are, therefore, asking every Negro to stay off the buses on Monday in protest of the arrest and trial.”
