Tahrir celebrates army 1973 victory
Thousands at Tahrir paid tribute to the martyrs of the 6 of October War as several banners were put up in praise of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to defend Egypt’s land.

Many set off fireworks and held the national flag chanting “Long live Egypt.”

In addition, protesters held up posters of military commander-in-chief and Defence Minister Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who has recently gained popularity after the army deposed Morsi on 3 July amid mass nationwide protests against him.

Hundreds had started gathering on Friday at the main stage in the square shortly after breaking their Ramadan fast after sunset.

Parents of martyrs killed in violent clashes over the past couple of years spoke on stage and called upon Egyptian authorities to bring those responsible to justice.

The event was organised by Rebel (Tamarod) campaign, which spearheaded the 30 June protests, and the 30 June Front.

Thousands have also gathered at the presidential palace in Heliopolis to commemorate the anniversary of the 1973 war.

At the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004 the candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, a young man named Barack Obama gave the keynote speech. It was clear that he had “star power” even though he was promoting the election of the now risible John Kerry/John Edwards team.
The speech was full of his goat herding father, his domestic to the Brits grandfather, his other grandfather’s service in Patton’s army, blah, blah, blah, and their abiding faith in the promise of America. It was also full of “I feel everyone’s pain”…from Arab Americans detained unfairly, workers who lost their jobs, kids whose education is stymied by poverty, poor old folks who can’t pay for their prescriptions, women coping with the vapors, …blah, blah,blah…the usual litany of things that America must fix, with a dollop of the need for work and responsibility. The audience swooned with applause.
Then came this impressive tidbit:
“It is that fundamental belief — it is that fundamental belief — I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sisters’ keeper — that makes this country work.It’s what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family: “E pluribus unum,” out of many, one.
Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there’s not a liberal America and a conservative America; there’s the United States of America.
There’s not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there’s the United States of America.”
Really Mr. President? Is that why you made that race baiting, grudge inspiring speech about the Martin/Zimmerman case yesterday? Is that why you stoke Black racism exculpating it with past history? Can you seriously blame four generations of teenagers having babies without fathers repeating the tragedies of their great grandmothers on slavery or segregation?
You made things so much worse.
I have no hope you’ll ever change.

The False Premise

Peace. The word itself is a two-edged sword, conveying a powerful spirit of tranquility while simultaneously evoking a strange, inescapable anxiety. It is the quintessential dichotomy of humanity to so passionately crave the very thing we so effectively repel by bowing to the baser elements of our nature. So much painstaking effort, so many resources, studies conducted, books written, futile negotiations – over decades, centuries – and lasting peace between men continues to elude us. The near daily headlines about one more failed attempt by U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry to bring Israelis and Palestinians “back” to negotiations would be outright hilarious were they not so tragically predictable and transparent.

The dilemma that fuels frustration over getting the parties to the negotiating table is driven by the assumption that peace is a thing to be desired by all. One would think the prospect of having in place those essentials that make life worth living – health, family, community, sustenance, love – are universal aspirations. This is, sadly, an illusion. Peace eludes humanity because there are people who do not want to live in peace. There is no conundrum in determining why our species has endured millennia of genocide and oppression unabated. Warring ideologies and clashing civilizations are the norm, not an aberration. But why, we must ask. Rather than talking in circles and chasing rationales around mountains of excuses and justifications, better to state the case without equivocation. Peace is possible only through mutual agreement or, if agreement fails, enforced maintenance.
