In The Lord of the Rings, Boromir, heir to the forces of the ancient land of Gondor, urges his allies to use the One Ring to smite the evil Sauron. Apparently Rand Paul, heir to the ancient forces of Ron Paul, is familiar with this tale. He has made news recently by urging his allies to use what he considers to be the political equivalent of the One Ring, which, like its fantasy cousin, will bring certain victory.
That Ring is “libertarian Republicanism.” If only conservatives were more tolerant on social issues and less supportive of U.S. military involvement overseas, Paul argues, they could win elections in blue states and nationwide. “I don’t think we need to dilute our message of low taxes, less regulation, and balanced budgets to win in California,” he recently said at the Reagan Library.
In LOTR, the reader knows Boromir is offering his friends a fatal temptation. But those who listen to Paul have no such advance knowledge regarding his advice. Is he right, or is this too good to be true?
Let’s begin with the case that libertarian Republicans make, a tale that often starts with blue-state governors. They remind us that states well outside the reach of GOP presidential candidates have in the last decade elected pro-choice Republicans as governors. Republicans such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Pataki, Mitt Romney, and Linda Lingle have won statewide in California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and even Barack Obama’s Hawaii. All ran as fiscal conservatives and social moderates, and all succeeded where GOP presidential nominees got creamed.

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a young woman who was beheaded in a knife attack in Sheffield.
Aras Hussein appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court accused of murdering Reema Ramzan, 18.
Miss Ramzan, who was from the Darnall area of Sheffield, died on June 4 following an incident at a property on Herries Road, in the city.
Detectives said she suffered a severe knife attack resulting in fatal injuries, including the severing of her head.
Hussein, of Herries Road, Sheffield, is also charged with assaulting five people at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, where he was taken following his arrest by police.
That’s some genius policing just in the last sentence.
But no Islam to see here, folks. Don’t even think about it. Just “an incident at a property”.

Leftist Israeli newspaper Haaretz recently treated us to an article by editor Adar Primor, titled “Israel Must Recognize Kosovo.” For Israel’s own sake, no less. ( “Israel must remain faithful to the principles of self-determination on which it was founded and be the 100th country to recognize Kosovo. Not just for Kosovo’s sake – but for its own.”) The cheap piece was a rehashing of the 90s-born pop platitudes, cliches and myths such as Milosevic’s “nationalist” speech which “ignited” four wars, and “national aspirations of an oppressed people [who] suffered massacres, rapes and ethnic cleansing,” plus tired and debunked designations such as “Butcher of the Balkans” and “worst war crimes in Europe since World War II.” The article was replete with the Pristina/Washington talking points: “unique case, modern-dressed girls, alcohol sold freely, and no chance of Islamization.” This autopilot was also the last guy who still on “quarter of a million” dead in the Balkan wars. Not surprisingly, Primor didn’t miss the opportunity to bring in the UN vote against Israel, on which Albania abstained but Serbia did not (that sad story is explained here). He also did the usual projection of the Albanians’ uncompromising “it’s all mine” demand onto the Serbian side. But then, this is someone who still perceives “unconditional” American support for Israel.
He also credulously quoted the prime minister, Hashim the Snake Thaci giving one of his usual Washington-Pristina talking points: “[Former foreign minister Vuk] Jeremic warned against a domino effect that could undermine the stability of the Balkans, bring to the surface both ‘dormant’ and new disputes in the world…Prime Minister Hashim Thaci answered this concern… ‘Kosovo is a unique case and, as a result, its independence doesn’t set any precedent. On the contrary; its freedom will be a cornerstone of stability for the Balkans, which will enter an era of cooperation and peace.’ From the perspective of five years hence, it’s clear: Thaci was right, and Jeremic (and Israel) were mistaken.”
Because a mere five years is such a long, long time, right, providing all the hindsight on Kosovo anyone will ever need. Five years, incidentally, during which the international overseers are still there and so Kosovo is still on good behavior (compared to what’s going to be once the do-gooders leave. That’s if you don’t count a pogrom of the dead, digging up bodies and scattering the remains to mark five years of “independence”).
Primor couldn’t resist mentioning the monument that Pristina dedicated two weeks ago “to commemorate Kosovo Jews murdered in the Holocaust,” and that the authorities have been going out of their way (lately) to make Kosovo’s 56 Jews feel welcome.

CASE 1 – ONE SIZE FITS ALL
Caught trying to sneak past Dubai Airport customs with hashish hidden in his shoes, an Afghan drug trafficker claimed he was in someone else’s shoes when he was hauled before the court. His plea: The drug-stuffed footwear wasn’t actually his as he had swapped his own warm ones with the ones of a compatriot shivering from cold just before boarding a flight to Dubai. “And you were sure his shoes would fit you just perfectly?” the judge enquired during the trial, before eventually delivering a fitting verdict last month — 10 years in prison followed by deportation.
CASE 2 – GAME OVER FOR VAMPIRE
Confronted with bite marks on the cheeks, neck and thighs of a six-year-old British girl, a Sri Lankan driver facing molestation charges attributed the bruises to a vampire game he was playing with the child. “I acted as a vampire and we were playing a game when I bit her neck, cheeks and thighs. I did not kiss or molest her,” he said in his lame defence. Obviously, it didn’t work. Early last year, the Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced him to six months in jail. Mr Count Dracula was deported after completing his prison term.
CASE 3 – NOT ONE’S CUP OF TEA
For months in 2012, an Indonesian housemaid diligently mixed her urine in a pot from which her boss and his wife poured tea. But when the woman was arrested and charged with endangering lives, she insisted that the urine-mix was actually a secret potion that would cast a spell on the family and prompt them to hike her salary.
“I hoped to win their affection… I didn’t intend to endanger their lives,” she claimed before Dubai Court of Misdemeanours which sentenced her to two months in prison.
CASE 4 – EMERGENCY AID
A couple thought it was a good idea to cozy up in a lifeguard tower on Jumeriah beach. But when the Indian man and the Filipina were caught early this year and charged with having an illicit affair, the man came up with a defence plea that appears to have been lifted straight from Bollywood movie Cocktail. “I was giving her an emergency CPR (Cardiopulmonary) resuscitation because she was cold,” he claimed. However, an Emirati mum who watched the act for 50 minutes testified otherwise and the duo were sentenced to one year in jail.

American Thinker has long taken a skeptical attitude toward the official account of the TWA 800 disaster. Jack Cashill, who also wrote a book on the subject, has an impressive body of work on the subject, some of it published on these pages. Co-founder Richard Baehr took up the subject. Now comes news of a new documentary film that says it has proof of a cover-up. Via Fox News:
A group of whistle-blowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago.
However, the six whistle-blowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down.
Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996, en route to Paris when it exploded and crashed off the coast of nearby East Moriches, Long Island, killing everyone on the plane.
“..This team of investigators who actually handled the wreckage and victims’ bodies, prove that the officially proposed fuel-air explosion did not cause the crash,” reads a statement by the producers of the film, which will debut on cable network EPIX next month. “They also provide radar and forensic evidence proving that one or more ordnance explosions outside the aircraft caused the crash.” However, the statement said they did not speculate about the source or sources of any ordnance explosions.
News of this is not making a huge splash beyond Fox News, and I fully expect a media cofferdam to be erected, confining concern about a huge government cover-up to the 30% or so of the population reached by the conservative media. The CBS website features coverage that raises questions:
