Public Trust: Our president, it seems, is quite the fabulist. A new book reveals he fabricated yet another story in his 1995 memoir, this one about a white girlfriend complaining about black anger.

In his supposedly nonfiction memoir, “Dreams From My Father,” Obama claims he and the girlfriend got into a “big fight” after seeing a New York play by a black writer. He became annoyed when she allegedly asked “why black people were so angry all the time.”

Obama biographer David Maraniss contacted the former girlfriend, Genevieve Cook, who insists the scene never took place. She says they never even saw a show by a black playwright.

Maraniss, who works for the Washington Post, snagged an interview with the president and asked him about the discrepancy. Obama agreed with Cook’s account.

So why did he make up the anecdote? He told Maraniss it was a “useful theme to make about sort of the interactions that I had in the relationships with white girlfriends.”

How convenient — especially when the overall theme of his bitter memoir is white racism.

Obama told another whopper in his autobiography. He wrote that while thumbing through a copy of Life magazine, he came across a story about a black man who underwent chemical treatments to lighten his skin. He claims he recoiled in horror at the photo of the bleached man, who looked like “an albino.”

Then he says he got so angry that “I felt my face and neck get hot.” He was upset that blackness was so condemned in America that a black man would resort to making himself white.
Only, that story wasn’t true, either. Life never published such an article.

Obama also grossly exaggerates his own battles with racism while attending a mostly white prep school in Honolulu.

The French presidential elections, initially presented by pollsters and commentators as a pushover for the Socialist contender François Hollande, turns out to be a cliff-hanger.[i] The best comparison with the United States might well be the 1948 Dewey- Truman match. On the eve of the final round, pollsters admit that the gap between the two candidates is gradually narrowing. My prediction is a photo finish, with less than one point of difference. This is the most important presidential election in France since the end of World War 2. The outcome is not only crucial for France but for the free world. I think this is the most clear cut opportunity for a European nation to stand up and confront the wave of conquest unleashed in 1973. There has been some speculation about how this would happen: mass incarceration and deportation of Muslims, civil war, craven surrender… Now, in the European country with the largest Muslim population, the question is going to be treated democratically; not by revolution, not by tribal warfare, but by the exercise of hard won freedom through institutions created and developed over the centuries. French citizens, acutely aware of the high stakes, are riveted on a campaign that has become increasingly articulate and well-defined. It is impossible in the space of this brief article to give a detailed account of issues and events, particularly to an English-speaking readership that has received rather sketchy superficial information. (I will remedy that with an in-depth essay soon.)

The Left tried to focus the campaign on economic issues, which could only fall to the disadvantage of President Sarkozy who had been unable to fulfill his promise to implement extensive structural reforms that would release the untapped potential for growth and significantly reduce the unemployment that has plagued France for the past thirty years. But voters, fortunately, have had their say. While it would be false to claim that the score of Front National candidate Marine Le Pen, who came in third, has no economic component it is impossible to ignore the burning issue that sent so many votes her way: Islam. Nicolas Sarkozy cannot win the second and final round without attracting a significant percentage of the Front National vote. François Hollande, who counts on reaping the total far Left vote, will gladly take in the economically disgruntled who “mistakenly” went for FN but will grant them nothing in exchange. Now, on the eve of the final round, polls are still predicting victory for François Hollande. One issue could make the difference:

A bunch of far leftists and other usual suspects are busy with a related Facebook page (I won’t increase its traffic by linking to it), that contains such Israel-demonising posts as

“The Israeli occupation army tried to arrest a toddler recently. It could get worse- they could arrest a baby one day. Soldiers have let pregnant mothers and their unborn babies die horrible deaths at their checkpoints, so why arrest babies?… It all makes sense if one has fascist sympathies.”

Er – shouldn’t that read “Islamofascist sympathies”?

Florida Senator Marco Rubio recently gave a speech [1] at the left-leaning Brookings Institution, where he was introduced by his colleague Joe Lieberman. In the speech, Rubio announced a bold new policy towards Russia. Considering two frightening recent pronouncements from Putin supporters, this new Rubio Doctrine cannot be implemented soon enough.

The five principles of the Rubio Doctrine:

Rubio argues that the U.S. must recognize that Russian interests are diametrically opposed to our own and that Russia will not act for the global common good. Rubio calls Russia “increasingly belligerent” despite four years of “reset” by the Obama administration, and he also states:

One thousand and fourteen days. One hundred and forty-five weeks. That how long the thirteen families who lost their sons, husbands and fathers will have waited until the court-martial of Maj. Nidal Hasan begins in late August. And that date could be extended once again, perhaps until after the election in November. Where is the timely justice for these families? How many of the families have called the White House and asked when will they receive closure?

FORT HOOD – A military judge delayed the court-martial of Maj. Nidal Hasan for the second time, pushing it back more than two months.

The accused Fort Hood shooter’s trial was set to start in mid-June, but his military-appointed attorneys last week sought a continuance until October.

The presiding judge Col. Gregory Gross partially granted the defense request April 18, setting an Aug. 20 start date for seating the jury.

Lead defense attorney Lt. Col. Kris R. Poppe asked for the second postponement to give Hasan’s legal team more time to review evidence documents that he described as “staggering.”

Hasan could face the death penalty if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted pre-meditated murder for the Nov. 5, 2009, shootings on post. Originally, the Army psychiatrist’s court-martial was set for March.

The deadly incident has been described as the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.

Fort Hood police shot Hasan the day of the shootings, and he’s now paralyzed from the waist down. He remains in custody at Bell County Jail.

We’ve come to a critical juncture in our history. The federal government is buying trillions of dollars of its own debt and plans to spend $47 trillion over the next decade in the belief that such expenditures will motivate the private sector to hire more workers.

By its nature government wants a bigger mission, more workers and pensions, and a greater scope for intrusions into people’s lives. It wants ever more taxes on income, consumption, property and wealth. It believes in the Orwellian view that taxes equal fairness more than it believes in growth.

The November election may come down to whether voters feel strongly about government’s increasingly dominant role in the day-to-day functioning of our society. As Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney puts it, President Obama “has spent the last four years laying the foundation for a new government-centered society.”

The federal government’s debt is now 105% of GDP, having doubled its share since the end of the Reagan Administration. Debt is projected to top 120% of GDP within the decade, greased higher by a fake debt limit—which should be repealed and replaced—and an eerie absence of any cabinet meetings to control spending.

We know the issue well. Washington gets bigger, richer and more intrusive every year and is so powerful and self- contained that it runs without any budget. The hottest economic news, gossip and party invitations come from Washington. Businessmen spend more and more of their time trying to curry Washington’s favor—the most profitable corporate investments nowadays are in lobbyists, not research or worker training. A core purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to define the relationship between individuals and their government, which was to play a supporting role. But in recent years government has become deeply controlling.

Annual federal spending has grown from President Carter’s $500 billion to a staggering $3.8 trillion now, which is more than any European nation’s entire GDP. To expend that much money requires a Byzantium—millions of square feet of office space, billions in worker pay and benefits, conflicting laws and regulations, and mountains of contracts.

9/11 defendants ignore judge at Guantanamo hearing

They knelt in prayer, ignored the judge and wouldn’t listen to Arabic translations as they confronted nearly 3,000 counts of murder. The self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks and four co-defendants defiantly disrupted an arraignment that ended late Saturday in the opening act of the long-stalled effort to prosecute them in a military court.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the admitted architect of the 2001 attacks that sent hijacked jetliners into New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the four men accused of aiding the conspiracy put off entering pleas until a later date. Another hearing was set for June 12.
Saturday’s arraignment, which should have taken a couple of hours at most, lasted almost 13 hours, including meal and prayer breaks, as the men appeared to make a concerted effort to stall the hearing at the U.S. military base in Cuba . The charges they face include 2,976 counts of murder and terrorism, which carry the death penalty.

Earlier Saturday, Mohammed cast off his earphones providing Arabic translations of the proceeding and refused to answer Army Col. James Pohl’s questions or acknowledge he understood them. All five men refused to participate in the hearing; two passed around a copy of The Economist magazine and leafed through the articles.

Walid bin Attash was confined to a restraint chair when he came into court, released only after he promised to behave.

Ramzi Binalshibh began praying alongside his defense table, followed by Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, in the middle of the hearing; Binalshibh then launched into a tirade in which he compared a prison official to the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and declared that he was in danger.

“Maybe they will kill me and say I committed suicide,’’ he said in a mix of Arabic and broken English.

The detainees’ lawyers spent hours questioning the judge about his qualifications to hear the case and suggested their clients were being mistreated at the hearing, in a strategy that could pave the way for future appeals. Mohammed was subjected to a strip search and “inflammatory and unnecessary’’ treatment before court, said his attorney, David Nevin.

It was the defendants’ first appearance in more than three years after stalled efforts to try them for the terror attacks, in which hijackers steered four commercial jets into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a western Pennsylvania field.

The defendants’ behavior outraged 9/11 family members watching on closed-circuit video feeds around the United States at East Coast military bases. One viewer shouted, “C’mon, are you kidding me?’’ at the Fort Hamilton base in Brooklyn.
“They’re engaging in jihad in a courtroom,’’ said Debra Burlingame, whose brother, Charles, was the pilot of the plane that flew into the Pentagon. She watched the proceeding from Brooklyn.
