The Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, founded in 1913, originally declared, “The immediate object of the League is to stop, by appeals to reason and conscience, and if necessary, by appeals to law, the defamation of the Jewish people. Its ultimate purpose is to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike, and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens.”

It was established, that is, to combat Jew-hatred. If and only if the Jewish community is secure, it would then be appropriate to extend organizational resources to helping others in need. Put another way, a Jewish rights organization, founded by Jews, should rightfully focus on the plight of…Jews.

But for several decades at least, what is now called the ADL does not prioritize Jews. Its new mission is “To stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all.” The ADL has elevated efforts to serve what it perceives as marginalized communities to equal or higher priority than the Jewish community, as though it has already eradicated antisemitism.

It has not. Recent FBI statistics show Jews are subject to more hate crimes per capita than any other group of Americans; twice as likely to be targeted as Black Americans, more than twice as likely as Muslims, and 50% more likely than those who are targeted for their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The filing from the American Center for Law & Justice calls for a U.S. Department of Education investigation into pervasive discrimination against Jews at the City University of New York.

A new federal complaint last week to the U.S. Department of Education is accusing the City University of New York of becoming a “pervasively hostile environment for Jewish students” over the last 10 years.

The July 19 filing from the Washington D.C.-based American Center for Law & Justice cites a laundry list of harassment of Jewish students and faculty, as well as other violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, across the CUNY system and dating back nearly a decade.

Jeffrey Lax, the Orthodox Jewish business department chair at CUNY’s Kingsborough Community College and founder of S.A.F.E. (Students and Faculty for Equality) CUNY, told JNS that this is at least the third known—and to date the broadest—federal complaint lodged on the matter. “I think the point of this filing is to show how pervasive and systemic the anti-Semitism is across the board throughout CUNY,” Lax told JNS.

The first duty of any parent is – and must always be – keeping their children safe. 

Whether from misadventure, bad influences, or just plain old childhood bumps and bruises, most parents will be the first to admit they have their hands full.   

For Jewish parents, however, there is another danger from which children must be protected.   For as most of us know and recognise, the scourge of Antisemitism afflicts Jews everywhere.  Sadly, that includes children. 

This week, the Jewish Chronicle devoted its front page, as well as a double-page spread, to new and terribly sad research from The Henry Jackson Society. 

HJS submitted 3,337 separate freedom of information requests to every high school in England to ask them about the volume of Antisemitism in their schools, as well as what – if anything – they were doing about it.  

Of these, 1,315 schools – about 40 per cent – responded.

One question asked how many incidents involving pupil misconduct, bullying, harassment, or similar events in which the term “Antisemitism” was recorded had taken place over the past five years. 

Alarmingly, the research revealed that instances of Antisemitic bullying at schools has almost tripled in the last five years.  We identified over 1,000 instances of such bullying.

An Orthodox Jewish man was brutally attacked Wednesday afternoon in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, after getting into an argument about a supposed car accident — adding to the growing number of attacks on Jewish people in the racially diverse neighborhood.

Yosef Hershkop, a 31-year-old community activist in Crown Heights, claimed he was attacked Wednesday in front of his 5-year-old son.

Video footage shared on Twitter appears to show four suspects, two getting out of a white car and two running from down the street, approaching Hershkop’s car before punching him in the face.

It seems as if Maher Abdel Qader of the Palestinian American Congress is everywhere. He knows everyone, at least in the Democrat Party, and has a hand in everything. He is close to Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Ramallah) and Cori Bush (D-Race Hate Hysteria), as well as a prominent former congressman, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Abdel Qader has also hosted numerous fundraisers for New York City Mayor Eric Adams and was part of a committee putting together a fundraiser for Jesse Jackson’s son Jonathan Jackson, who is running for the House in Illinois. There are lots of well-connected, well-heeled people out there, but Abdel Qader is striking because he is a vociferous anti-Semite. So why is he palling around with so many prominent Democrats? Apparently, their views are compatible.

Abdel Qader appears to be closest to Tlaib, who has, according to Fox News, “participated in several events with Abdel Qader over the years, with the most recent fundraiser posted to his Instagram account on September 25, 2021. One day after the fundraiser, Abdel Qader posted a picture of himself alongside Tlaib on a Manhattan, New York, rooftop. He has been quite generous to Tlaib: “Abdel Qader has not only been a key fundraiser for Tlaib, donating $6,500 to her campaign since 2018, but he was also the chairman of her finance committee during her successful 2018 Congressional campaign. Tlaib introduced Abdel Qader by the title at a campaign event. And in 2018, Tlaib presented Abdel Qader with a medal as a sign of gratitude for his help with her inaugural campaign.”

Tlaib, a vehement critic of Israel, was apparently untroubled by Abdel Qader’s anti-Semitism. The other Democrat candidates Abdel Qader supported didn’t seem to be bothered by it, either. In May, Abdel Qader posted on Instagram: “May 18, 2022, Fundraiser for Keith Ellison the 30th attorney general of the State of Minnesota in Manhattan- New York. Also attended by Michael J. Garner, Chief Diversity Officer, MTA Department of Diversity and Civil Rights.” Of course it was. Of Jonathan Jackson, Abdel Qader wrote: “Jonathan Jackson son of Jesse Jackson/ Chicago is running for congress and needs our support. He is a staunch supporter of Palestine, Palestinians and our Arab American community.”

He has hosted numerous fundraisers for New York City Mayor Eric Adams; he was part of a committee putting together a fundraiser for Jesse Jackson’s son Jonathan Jackson, who is running for the House in Illinois; and he is close to Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Ramallah) and Cori Bush (D-Race Hate), as well as a prominent former congressman, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Abdel Qader is also a virulent anti-Semite, which should surprise no one, given the bent of today’s Democrat Party.

It is odd, however, that Adams, who has courted New York’s Jewish community and appointed two Orthodox Jews to his administration, would have close ties to Abdel Qader. Early in 2021, Abdel Qader was one of only six community leaders to speak with Adams on a Zoom call and talk over the then-candidate’s “campaign vision [and] issues,” as well as to “engage in his campaign.” Abdel Qader noted in an Instagram post that has apparently been removed that Adams was “on board with our community and will stand to support us.” Then in September 2021, Abdel Qader posted on Instagram in another post that was later removed or concealed: “Arab and Muslim community leaders met at Marriott hotel – LaGuardia and held a Fundraising for Eric Adams the democratic nominee for New York City mayor….Event was organized by the Muslim Agenda 2021 Coalition.”

When will we ever learn?

The number of Jewish families and young Jews who hide their Jewish symbols speaks to the massive failure of the plethora of Jewish organizations to fight Jew hatred and anti-Zionism. We have witnessed religious Jews attacked walking down the road. Students attacked on campus.

When do we say Dayenu? Enough! Jew hatred is not rational. It is embedded in the DNA, the blood, the tissue, the very fibre of their being in billions of people.

In the 3000 year history of Jew hatred, many of us thought the Holocaust would be the end of the hate.No. 

Today, 2022, Jews are the No. 1 target in America for hate crimes in proportion to the population.

Incidents targeting the Jewish community in the State of New York have increased 24 percent since last year. New York State, home of millions of Jews who thought they would be safe.  

Reported by CBC, the most antisemitic media outlet in Canada: record levels of antisemitism were recorded in Canada last year, with sharp increases in Quebec and British Columbia. The annual audit by Jewish advocacy group B’nai Brith found there were 2,799 anti-Jewish hate crimes, including beatings, vandalism of synagogues and swastikas in schools.
