As states across the country begin the process of reopening, Americans continue to battle over the methods governors and local authorities have used to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

Unfortunately, many states and localities have set up arbitrary and, in many cases, absurd rules that do little more than aggravate citizens and almost nothing to stop the spread of the virus.

For instance, some Americans have been pulled over and ticketed for merely driving, hardly an activity that is likely to spread disease. 

One Pennsylvania woman received a $200 ticket for violating Gov. Tom Wolf’s statewide stay-at-home order when she said she had merely gone on a drive to relieve her quarantine restlessness, according to the York Dispatch. 

If anything, driving in your own car is a far better method to prevent spreading COVID-19 than, say, using public transportation. 

As former California state Rep. Chuck DeVore wrote for The Federalist, states with a higher amount of mass transit generally have had a higher number of COVID-19 cases than other states, even taking into consideration urban density. Perhaps we are lucky that the Green New Dealers didn’t get their wish to end car and air travel and force Americans to switch to rail.

In an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” Friday, when former Vice President and 2020 hopeful Joe Biden was asked to speak directly Democrats aligned with Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s progressive agendas, he wasted no time saying he’s “going to beat Joe Biden” before laying out several areas of his policies.

“I’m prepared to say that I have a record of over 40 years,” Biden said. “And that I’m going to beat Joe Biden. Look at my record. The fact is that some areas that I think, for example, I think health care is a right, not a privilege. I do not support Medicare for all. I will not support Medicare for all. But I do support making sure that Obama care is around as a public option.”

He added, “But I do not support a forgiving debt loan for every single solitary person no matter where you went to school. But I do support the idea, if, in fact, you have student debt as a consequence of going to a public university and your income is under $125, 000, it should be forgiven. I do believe that any going to school that in fact goes to a public university and/or community college, they should be able to go for free if income is under $125,000.”

That same day, Biden told black voters on an early morning radio show also posted to youtube that if they can’t decide whether to vote for him or Trump, they ‘ain’t black.’ Later, Biden explained the comment as “much too cavalier.”

More than 600 of the nation’s physicians sent a letter to President Trump this week calling the coronavirus shutdowns a “mass casualty incident” with “exponentially growing negative health consequences” to millions of non COVID patients.

“The downstream health effects…are being massively under-estimated and under-reported. This is an order of magnitude error,” according to the letter initiated by Simone Gold, M.D., an emergency medicine specialist in Los Angeles.

“Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%,” the letter said. Other silent casualties:  “150,000 Americans per month who would have had new cancer detected through routine screening.”

From missed cancer diagnoses to untreated heart attacks and strokes to increased risks of suicides, “We are alarmed at what appears to be a lack of consideration for the future health of our patients.”

Media pundits and politicians are now in the habit of claiming it was the pandemic itself that has caused unemployment to skyrocket and economic growth to plummet. The claim is that sick and dying workers, fearful consumers, and disrupted supply chains would cause economic chaos. Some have even claimed that economic shutdowns actually help the economy, because it is claimed allowing the spread of the disease will itself destroy employment and economic growth.

Leaving aside the fact there’s no evidence lockdowns actually work, we can nonetheless look to past pandemics—where coercive government interventions were at most sporadic—we should see immense economic damage.  Specifically, we can look to the the pandemic of 1957-58, which was more deadly than the COVID-19 pandemic has been so far. We can also look to the 1918-19 pandemic. Yet, we will see that neither produced economic damage on a scale we now see as a result of the government mandated lockdowns. This thoroughly undermines the claims that the lockdowns are only a minor factor in economic destruction, and that the virus itself is the real culprit.

Watching an actress worth $200 million go into an orgiastic state because Dr. Anthony Fauci, the “coolest guy on the planet” has agreed to chat with her and pontificate about his lucrative, 40-year-old pet theory on vaccines, is beyond depraved.

That’s what happened when fading Hollywood A-lister Julia Roberts put on a serious-looking pair of specs and “interviewed” Fauci in the fawning Hollywood style. Roberts, an actress, outdid any fawner in the entertainment industry press.

And it was disgusting. After all, 39 million Americans are out of work and suffering through an economic meltdown that her “personal hero” largely created.

Let’s think about what is going on here with this unwelcome bit of Hollywood fluff:

The country is in the midst of what Dr. Fauci calls a pandemic emergency and not only does he think it’s appropriate to talk about who will play him on television, which he did earlier, weeks later he sits down with Roberts, an uber-rich, Hollywood actress who actually tells him she is “thrilled” because “there are very few experts of anything in the world.”  To make this statement even more mind-numbing, Fauci doesn’t refute her assessment.

As I’ve managed to chronicle since the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, certain circumstances have prompted a lot of people to reveal their true colors, as it were. Many of these revelations can be summed up in two words: Dangerous and stupid.

 Not all of those who’ve displayed dangerous tendencies have evidenced stupidity, nor vice-versa, although some have exhibited both of these dubious qualities.                   

On the dangerous side, we have numerous newsworthy examples. Certainly, many who didn’t suspect that having uber-progressive governors in their states carried the potential for serious civil rights violations in the face of a crisis situation are now painfully aware of this. Prior to social distancing, a lot of us weren’t aware that so many of our neighbors were of the temperament that they might easily get fired up to burn some witches or turn local Jews in to the Gestapo—but there it is. Parents have actually been carried off in chains in front of their terrified young children for perceived transgressions in the area of social distancing.

In the realm of the stupid, there have been plentiful examples as well, such as those who’ve come to blows in public places over someone’s failure to don a mask, or standing too close in line at the grocery store.

Not all of the dangerous deportment and stupidity we’re witnessing has to do with COVID-19, although I daresay that the reality of the pandemic tends to shed a completely new light on things we might ordinarily find stupid and potentially dangerous.
